Most iterations of Spider-Man have some kind of woeful story or another. But Tom Holland’s Peter takes the worst hit of them all in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Peter’s real predicament began when he thought he could fix Mysterio’s fabrication with a simple spell.
I would expect one to talk out the exact details of the spell before it is enchanted. But it is only during the spell that Peter pleads with Strange to let a few people (May, MJ, and Ned) remember him.
Inevitably these requests distract Strange, who ends up messing up the spell. Cue the multiverse opening up.
Even then, encouraged by May’s take on morality, Peter is relentlessly optimistic about “fixing” the situation.
But Peter fails to consider a few things: Not everybody would agree with his understanding of an ideal solution. Secondly, when you’re trying to fix something as evil as the dark Green Goblin, you will have casualties. Peter has to learn this the hard way when he loses May.
And lastly, it would be naive to think that with a concept such as the multiverse, threats would be limited to five people. As Strange informs him that more intruders would be pouring in, Peter finally realizes this was never a battle he could win.
The only way Peter can save everybody is if he makes the ultimate sacrifice — the original solution which he kept deflecting. But this time, it’s not just about making people forget Peter Parker is Spider-Man… The whole universe had to forget Peter Parker’s existence, no exceptions.
The spell is successful, the threat is averted, but his losses are multifold.
When it comes to May, Peter has to live through the guilt that it was his decisions that brought her untimely demise. There is no way he can undo her death or bring her back.
This probably also prompts him from keeping his distance from MJ and Ned. He promises to reconnect with them. But when he does meet them after the spell, he realizes that their lives could be normal, nay, happier and safer without him around.
I can help but think how unfair it is that Peter is also erased from all things Avengers.
Holland’s Spidey ends up with the worst fate than all his counterparts: his identity erased, his loved ones lost, and incredibly alone.
