A new teaser for the upcoming Disney+ series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, is out now. The first two episodes of the series will premiere on December 20, 2023, on Disney+.
Based on Rick Riordan’s young adult fantasy series of the same name, Percy Jackson and the Olympians tells the story of Percy Jackson, a troubled, dyslexic kid who discovers he is half-God and the son of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. In the course of five novels, Percy attends a special school for demigods called Camp Half-Blood and faces different challenges in each book.
Percy is usually accompanied by his best friends, Grover Underwood and Annabeth Chase. The trio faces new villains in every book, many of whom are characters from Greek mythology. The books feature gods and goddesses from the Greek Pantheon who play important roles in the novels.
The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is based on Rick Riordan’s first novel in the Percy Jackson series, titled Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. In the first book, Percy and his friends must catch the thief who stole Zeus’ lightning bolt and deal with some eccentric challenges in their path. Check out the new teaser here:
In the recently released teaser, Percy is introduced as a ‘troubled kid’ who has to deal with poor grades and bullies at school. As a dyslexic kid, Percy has hardly been able to cope with conventional academic work. However, he considers all of it quite normal for a special child like him.
But the trouble arises when Percy starts encountering strange creatures and has experiences that are not normal. Finally, Grover Underwood visits him to tell him about his true identity. Percy’s mother also plays an important role in his journey, as she is presumed to be dead in the beginning, but later, Percy manages to bring her back.
The trailer also features various different creatures who appear in the books. It features Chiron, a centaur who mentors Percy and his friends, and Grover, a satyr who becomes Percy’s best friend. Other recurring characters include Luke, Clarisse, Thalia, and other Greek gods and goddesses.
The students at Camp Half-Blood appear in their signature orange t-shirts, and there are many scenes where the students are seen practicing sword fighting. The trailer also includes a glimpse of Percy holding the Riptide, his special sword.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians is one of the most awaited shows of the year as fans of Percy Jackson have been looking forward to a good, faithful adaptation of the popular books for years now. The first two books of the series were adapted into live-action films, but they were neither loved by the audience nor the critics. The films, starring Logan Lerman and Alexandria Daddario, are considered one of the worst adaptations of a literary work.
Moreover, the new Percy Jackson series has been praised for its inclusivity and diversity. The series faced controversy for casting a person of color in the role of Annabeth Chase. However, Rick Riordan himself defended the casting choice. Riordan has been a part of the scriptwriting process and is heavily involved in the series himself. Therefore, fans have very high expectations from the series.
While it is too early to talk about subsequent seasons now, the series will probably adapt all five books in the Percy Jackson series into five different seasons if the first season succeeds.
So, let’s hope for the best and look forward to December 20, when we’ll get to watch the first two episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
