Respectfully, Cap… get out the way. Captain Carter is here.
Marvel’s testing new waters with its first-ever animated series What If..?, set to premiere on Disney+.
The series will reimagine our superheroes as we know them and explore a new reality. This comes after the Loki series saw the sacred Timeline explode into a multiverse, changing the course of MCU and setting future Phase 4 projects up.
Now, Marvel has dropped the first look at Peggy as Captain Carter, who will replace Steve Rodgers’ Captain America in the upcoming series. The poster is the first in a series of many artworks inspired by What…?, made by artist Freya Betts.
The illustration sees Peggy Carter’s Captain America style poster as the super-soldier under a torn World War II poster. The artist, Freya Betts, makes artworks for many films, and her recent work includes a stunning poster for The Green Knight.
Hayley Atwell portrayed Peggy Carter in the first two Captain America films, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter (short film & series of the same name), and is set to reprise her role in What If…?.
As reported by CBR, executive producer Brad Winderbaum stated during a press conference that Captain Carter’s story will grow over multiple seasons of the animated series.
We realized, I think, early on in development as we were starting to get [A.C. Bradley’s] scripts and starting to look at the arc of the series that there was going to be a character that bubbled up and became more important.
Not more important than the rest, but had a strong relationship with The Watcher, who is really our driving force behind the series, and that’s Captain Carter.
Brad Winderbaum, Producer
Fans won’t have to wait long to see the alternate timeline of things as What If…? is set to premiere on Disney+ in about a week on August 11.
About What If…?
What If…? is an American animated anthology series created by A.C. Bradley for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name.
It explores what would happen if major moments from the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) occurred differently.
The series is produced by Marvel Studios, their first animated series since becoming their own production company. Bradley serves as head writer of the series, with Bryan Andrews directing.
Jeffrey Wright stars as the Watcher, who narrates the series. By September 2018, Marvel Studios was developing a number of series for Disney+, and one based on the What If…? comic was first reported in March 2019.
