“They’re gone, but their opinion stays in the house,” is one of the many ways Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight talks about the late Helen McCrory, the actor who essayed the formidable matriarch Aunt Polly.
In an interview with Radio Times, via iNews, Knight discussed the gaping hole McCrory’s Aunt Polly has left the political crime thriller with.
Knight also talked about how both the actress and the character will continue having a long-lasting effect on the show, particularly Tommy (Cillian Murphy).
I think it is like when anybody who has lost a member of their family – they’re gone but their opinion stays in the house… In other words, when something happens you still think, ‘What would they have thought about this? What would their opinion have been of this?’ and I have tried to keep that with Polly so that the family still thinks, ‘What would Polly have done?’ which is what I think happens with people.

McCrory passed away last April at the age of 52 after a long and hard battle with breast cancer. She played Aunt Polly, the matriarch of the Shelby family.
McCrory’s Aunt Polly played a significant role in the family’s business – from keeping them together to saving them with her incomparable willpower.
Since the death of the beloved actress, the Peaky Blinders cast has occasionally expressed about feeling a loss similar to that of a family pillar.
Sophie Rundle, who plays Polly’s niece Ada Shelby, said filming season 6 “felt off-kilter and wrong.” Main protagonist, Murphy, said that the series is “really in tribute to her and to honor her.”
Murphy also revealed to Empire Magazine, via Metro, that Knight has kept McCrory “very, very present.”
Viewers are now curious to know what lies ahead for the Shelby family. Tommy is expected to take the biggest blow from the matriarch’s death, as fans saw him descend into darkness and self-destruction that only Polly could’ve probably saved him from.
The fate of the Shelby family will come to light when Peaky Blinders season 6 finally premieres on February 27 at 9 PM.
