James Gunn sure does know how to use a post-credit scene where he offers humor, teases an Easter egg, creates suspense, and leaves us with a mixed bag of thoughts and emotions. Peacemaker Episode 4 post-credit scene was no different and perhaps even hints at something bigger.
Throughout the first three episodes, we’ve been wondering what exactly are these Butterflies, how they function, what’s their motive, and more. While Episode 4 doesn’t provide all the answers, it does tease how the Butterflies work.
In the Episode 4 post-credit scene, Peacemaker rants about how it’s impractical for a duck to disguise as a human being. The pants would be too loose, and the beak wouldn’t exactly fit in the human mask. This could be a hint at the way Butterflies function.
The post-credit scene was an extension of the scene where Vigilante and Peacemaker are in The White Dragon’s secret facility. They were arguing about a metaphorical duck where Vigilante suggests that if Peacemaker’s father is a racist, toxic person, Peacemaker could be following in his footsteps.
However, instead of leading into this, the argument goes on a completely different tangent where Peacemaker frustratingly rants about how Vigilante’s idea that a duck could be a human being is the stupidest one he’s ever had.
Furthermore, he goes into details like it would be utterly impractical for the duck to wear human skin and human clothes because the clothes would just hang loose and the duck wouldn’t know what to do with the beak.
While all this seems to be a humorous watch, it can be James Gunn’s way of telling us how the Butterflies function. The analogy is uncanny. We see a butterfly come out of Senator Goff’s head in Episode 3 and wonder what exactly it was doing there and what its function was residing within human beings.
With Peacemaker’s rant, it could be a possibility that Butterflies aren’t taking over humans, but instead, Butterflies are taking the shape of human beings. I know it’s a wild theory and the chances of this coming true are negligible, but hey, one can wonder.
Even Judomaster tells Peacemaker that Butterflies are not what he thinks he is. But before he could complete the sentence, Adebayo shoots him.
Well, whatever it is, I can’t stop wondering what this means, and I can’t wait for Episode 5 to reveal more.
