Pedro Pascal, who plays Joel Miller in HBO’s hit drama series The Last of Us, has been trolled on social media after he won the Best Hero Award at the 31st MTV Awards 2023.
The Last of Us is set in a post-apocalyptic world where Joel Miller is given the task of escorting a teenager, Ellie, to the Fireflies as she’s immune to the rapidly spreading disease. Ellie is humanity’s only hope for survival.
The series also won the Best Show Award at the MTV Awards after being lauded as one of the best adaptations of a video game. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay received immense critical acclaim for their performance. Fans have appreciated The Last of Us for being faithful to its source material as well.
Pascal’s performance was highly acclaimed by both fans and critics alike, leading to an increase in his popularity within the industry. As a result, it came as no surprise when he won the award.
However, those familiar with the show or game would recognize the irony in this, as Joel Miller’s actions throughout his life were far from heroic. Fans have been voicing their opinion about this issue on social media.

There is no denying that Pedro Pascal was incredible as Joel in the series. However, fans are angry about his character being labelled as a ‘hero’ as many of his actions are quite contrary to what a hero would do.
According to many, Joel’s trauma led him to do things that doomed humanity and his actions were driven by selfish reasons and not the good of humanity.
As such, no one has an issue with an award show crediting Pascal for his amazing performance. They are disagreeing with the idea of naming Joel as a ‘hero’ in The Last of Us.
However, it seems like the MTV Awards was intending to credit Pascal’s performance and his caliber as an actor rather than the deeds of his character. It would be better if they named it “Best Actor Award” or “Best Performance in a Lead Role’, which would have cleared everything.
