Tsutomu Nihei, the creator of brilliant anime movies like Blame! and Knights of Sidonia, will be back with a brand new project in 2022. Ōyukiumi no Kaina is the working title of the new anime, and its tagline is “boy-meets-girl high fantasy.”
The project takes us to a world where land is covered with the Great Snow Sea. Giant trees have sprung from the earth, and humans live on them.
With such an interesting setting, this anime promises everything a dystopian anime can provide.
Ōyukiumi no Kaina will be released in January 2023. Crunchyroll will stream the series outside Asia.
A new trailer has been revealed to show us the unique world constructed by Tsutomu Nihei:
The trailer debuts the two main characters, Kaina and Liliha. Kaina is a boy who lives above the Tenmaku or the giant trees. Liliha is the princess of Atland, a small country in the Great Snow Sea.
Their chance encounter will lead to a story that surpasses ages and changes the world they live in.

Kodansha will also launch the manga adaptation of the anime in its Monthly Shonen Sirius magazine on February 26, 2022. Crunchyroll will license the manga outside Asia. Itoe Takemoto will illustrate the series.
Ōyukiumi no Kaina reminds me of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind due to the post-apocalyptic world-building. While Nausicaa exhibits the Earth covered by deserts, Ōyukiumi no Kaina has a snow-covered landscape.
The upcoming anime will have a lot to explain about why this world is almost unlivable and how the protagonists will change it together.

Ōyukiumi no Kaina is a “girl-meets-boy high fantasy” series by Tsutomu Nihei and Polygon Pictures. Itoe Takemoto A manga by Itoe Takemoto has been serialized in Kodansha’s Monthly Shonen Sirius since February 2022.
The story follows Kaina and Liliha, who live in a world covered by the Great Snow Sea. People live on giant trees that have sprung from the land, and Kaina lives there as well. Liliha is a princess of a small country in the Great Snow Sea.
