Overwatch 2 Being Accused of Reusing Assets in Battle Pass Rewards

Overwatch 2 enters early access next week with the sequel aiming to bring back its signature team-based shooter gameplay, with new heroes, maps, modes, and more. It promises tons of new content for players to dig their teeth in. The game is confirmed to receive regular seasonal updates every nine weeks.

Even with the brand new changes and promising updates to the overall game, fans have noticed that the sequel seems to be reusing assets from the previous game in its battle pass system.

Reddit user u/mitchhatesrats posted a picture showcasing one of the emotes that can be obtained through the Overwatch 2 Battle Pass. The emote shows Junkrat taking a sip from a large cap, which has an uncanny resemblance to Junkrat’s victory pose, Toast, from the first game.

Fans have been quick to notice this detail and point out the similarities between Junkrat’s emote and the victory pose. The fact that a victory pose from the first game was repackaged as an emote, and resold back to the players did not sit right with the fans.

With Overwatch 2 being a free-to-play title, unlike the first game, it is possible that Blizzard is conscious of minimizing any unwanted expenses, hence reusing assets from the first game. Assets being reused requires shorter amount of time when creating something as compared to making something from scratch.

A detailed video on the Overwatch 2 Season 1 Battle Pass would help players figure out whether the battle pass is worth spending money on or not.

With Overwatch 2 being released on October 4 for PC, PlayStation and Xbox consoles, the servers for the original game will be shut down so as to accommodate the sequel. October 1- October 2 will be the last weekend to play the first Overwatch before the servers are shut down forever. The preload window for Overwatch 2 has begun rolling out for players who want to jump into the Overwatch experience as soon as possible.

About Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2 is an upcoming first-person shooter developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. The sequel to the 2016 hero shooter Overwatch, the game is intended to have a shared environment for player-versus-player (PvP) modes with the first game while introducing persistent cooperative modes. A major change in PvP was to reduce team sizes from six to five, which required several characters to be reworked.

Overwatch 2 was launched as free-to-play on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in early access on October 4, 2022.
