The upcoming Outlander season 7 is bringing back six major characters from past seasons, including Dougal MacKenzie.
The hit historical-romance/time-travel series is based on Diana Gabaldon’s book series of the same name. Outlander follows the story of a World War II nurse, Claire Randall, who mysteriously ends up traveling through time. She ends up in the Scottish Highlands in 1743, and falls in love with highlander Jamie Fraser.
The series has gained a huge fan-following over the years. Each season is based on one of the books. Although the show changed certain things, it has more or less remained faithful to the source material.
Outlander season 7 is currently in production and a lot of new details about the upcoming episodes are coming in.
According to Deadline, Outlander season 7 is all set to bring back six major fan-favorite characters from past seasons of the show. Here are the characters we can expect to see again in the upcoming season –
- Graham McTavish as Dougal MacKenzie, Jamie’s uncle
- Steven Cree as Old Ian Murray
- Andrew Whipp as Brian Fraser, Jamie’s father
- Nell Hudson as Laoghaire Fraser
- Layla Burns as Joan MacKimmie, Marsali’s sister and Jamie’s stepdaughter
- Lotte Verbeek as Geillis Duncan, Claire’s former friend-turned-enemy and a fellow time traveler
Showrunner, executive producer and writer, Matthew B. Roberts, announced the cast’s return in the following statement-
“One of the many joys of our epic story is the element of time travel which allows us to revisit some of our favorite characters in different times and places, and we’re thrilled to welcome back so many familiar faces for season seven. In addition to our returning cast, we’re also excited to welcome several new actors to the Outlander family and cannot wait to introduce them to fans in our extended season.”
Apart from these familiar faces, viewers will also get to see a number of new faces in Outlander season 7. Gloria Obianyo will be seen as Mercy Woodcock, a free Black woman trying to deal with all the difficulties and threats in Colonial America.
Rob Hallett will be playing Benedict Arnold, the famous Revolutionary soldier turned traitor. Diarmaid Murtagh will be seen as Buck MacKenzie, Dougal and Geillis’ illegitimate son and Roger’s ancestor. Kristin Atherton will also be joining the show as Jenny Murray, Jamie’s sister and Young Ian’s mother.
It will be interesting to see how closely Outlander season 7 follows the books. Since season 6 was shorter than usual, the storyline of the sixth book, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, was not completely adapted.
Season 7 will most likely pick up the rest of book 6 before moving on to the seventh book, An Echo in the Bone. Book 7 features a Scotland trip for Jamie and Claire, which will explain the return of many major characters.
However, the return of two characters, namely Dougal MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, is particularly strange. Both of them have been dead for a while, even in the past. So, apart from appearing in flashbacks, the only way they can make it to the series alive is through time-travel.
Starz has not yet officially announced when Outlander season 7 will premiere, but we can expect an announcement by early 2023.
