John B. Routledge and Sarah Cameron’s love story has been significant in Outer Banks since its debut on Netflix in 2020.
Despite their different backgrounds, their relationship has shown that one’s choices define one more than their current circumstances. Sarah and John B. have stuck by each other through thick and thin and even got ‘married’ at sea after they escaped from the Bahamas.
However, Sarah’s ex-boyfriend, Topper, has caused some trouble in their relationship.
In the second season of Outer Banks, Sarah and John B. experienced difficulties that led Sarah to seek comfort from Topper.
Nonetheless, they managed to resolve their issues and move on. Unfortunately, their relationship was once again tested when Big John returned from the dead. Sarah noticed that John B. and his father were hiding something from her, which led her to hook up with Topper on the beach in Season 3 Episode 6, “The Dark Forest.”
Madelyn Cline, the actress who plays Sarah, was asked by Screen Rant whether Sarah still had feelings for Topper. Cline gave the following response:
For me, what it ultimately boiled down to was that Sarah’s whole arc follows her finding a new family with the Pogues and her relationship with John B. She’s sacrificed everything, and she’s lost so much in the process and in this new life that she’s chosen. And so when she feels like she’s been kicked out of it, like a lot of people do, they go back to what feels familiar; what feels comfortable. And she does that. There’s probably still a part of her that is maybe mourning the loss of her old friends, her old life, when things were comfortable. So, for me, that’s what it was.

According to sources, Sarah’s attraction to Topper is solely based on familiarity, making it unlikely that a genuine romantic relationship will ever develop between them.
Even if Sarah were to have feelings for Topper, his actions of setting John B.’s house on fire would be difficult to overlook and likely squash any chance of reconciliation.
The audience is left to decide whether or not John B. should have forgiven Sarah for her infidelity or his violent outburst towards Topper. However, given the couple’s track record of overcoming obstacles, it would be surprising if this incident ended their relationship permanently.
As Season 4 approaches, there may be a shift in focus to the fan-favorite pairing of JJ and Kiara, who confessed their feelings for each other in the previous season.
Additionally, sparks flew between Pope and Cleo when they decided to abandon the “No Love Club” and kissed in the finale. However, due to an eighteen-month time jump in the season finale, the future of these couples remains unclear.
Nonetheless, fans can be rest assured that Netflix has renewed Outer Banks for a fourth season, which is expected to bring more clarity.
