The history of the shadow assassins and the harsh life they lead is revealed in episode 8 of Ousama Ranking: Treasure Chest titled “Kage’s Yearning.”

Constantly hiding in the shadows of one of the most hated clans in the kingdom, Kage and his mother had to be cautious all the time outside as they just managed to get by. However, a meeting with a knight changes this hopeless world and brings some light to Kage.

Bosse’s journey from mere giant searching for strength to a true king is explored. Initially wanting to be the biggest and strongest in battle, he moves on to realize the true meaning of strength, thanks to his wife.

3. Recap of Episode 8

The group of assassins known as the Shadow clan were extremely despised by many and had a lot of enemies, making their life permanently in hiding. Even Kage was chased down by children in the town as a kid and was always treated with enmity.

His mother had told him of his stature and that no one would ever help him so that he would have no choice but to become strong. Kage would sleep around his mom’s arms every night, watching the stars. One morning, a bullfight takes place in the middle of town with a crowd surrounding it.

The attraction scares Kage, who cannot handle violence of any kind. The two of them walk through the town doing some shopping, and his mom has to do a quick errand. Kage uses the time to play in the mud with sticks and finds him chasing after a butterfly, unfortunately leading him straight into Sir Kyo.

The children from before run after Kage after they spot him, but the chase is quickly interrupted by a rogue bull escaping the ring. Kage helps up one of the children, who is stunned by fear, and the bull charges straight into Kage before Kyo jumps in with a mighty tackle sending the bull straight into the wall.

Bosse had given up the strength of his child to the devil in exchange for becoming the strongest in the world. In his early life before Bojji, he and his wife had enjoyed a peaceful life together in the woods surviving on nature’s gifts and praising each other’s strength.

More than that, she had taught Bosse that true strength is not just for yourself but for others too. He showed the people his strength and kindness by helping out with all the small errands in the town. However, a day comes when a swarm of ogres attacks the city.

Taking them all out single-handedly, he returns covered in blood. As the time comes for the ranking, Bosse refuses to take the number one place, and it is a sign of how far he has come from his past understanding of what strength is.

Ōsama Ranking (Ranking of Kings) is a Japanese comedy manga series by Sōsuke Tōka. It has been serialized online via Echoes’ user-submitted Manga Hack website since May 2017. An anime television series adaptation by Wit Studio premiered in October 2021.

The story centers around Bojji, a deaf, powerless prince who cannot even wield a children’s sword. As the firstborn son, he strives hard and dreams of becoming the world’s greatest king.

However, people mutter about him behind his back as “a good-for-nothing prince” and “no way he can be king.” Bojji is able to make his first-ever friend, Kage, a literal shadow on the ground who somehow understands Bojji well.
