Otaku Store Chain Mandrake Charged For Opening Illegal Adult Shop In Tokyo

If you are an otaku and ever have the chance to visit Japan, you will likely come across the infamous Mandrake shops.

They have everything you can dream of, merchandise, rare figurines, cosplay material, and even vintage animation celluloids.

They have quite a presence at the Nakano Broadway Complex in Tokyo where they have around 30 shops. One of their newer shops in the complex had recently been caught up in a controversy due to its questionable location.

The company had already been warned by the police, but still continued to operate the adult store. Now, local authorities are raining down on them with strict action.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police have formally charged an executive of legal affairs for the otaku retail chain Mandarake on October 22, 2021.

The executive in question violated the Businesses Affecting Public Morals Regulation Law by operating an adult shop in a prohibited area.

The shop selling adult publications opened at the Nakano Broadway complex in Tokyo on August 28.

It was operating within 200 meters of a hospital and within the same complex as an internal medicine clinic and two dental clinics which operated three floors above.

This made the area unsuitable for any adult stores, but that isn’t it.

The store had opened a two-meter hallway away from “Spank!,” a fashion and clothing store targetted at teenage girls. The fashion store’s staff stated that they could not open up the business due to the presence of the adult shop.

This further stirred up the pot for the Mandrake store, which faced outrage on social media for openly displaying adult publications in a minor-prone area.

The authorities have singled out the adult store and have not charged the other Mandrake shops in the complex.

The company has already admitted to the charge stating that it was foolish of them to operate an adult store despite the police warning.
