2. Episode 9 Preview & Speculation
The preview of episode 9 is narrated by Yuigahama, titled “A Whiff of that Fragrance Will Always Bring Memories of that Season.” We see Yui approaching Hachiman in class, and after school, they hang out at a park. Hachiman buys Yui soft drink as she played on the swings.
At school, Iroha tells another story with a pained expression to Yukinoshita, Yui, and Hachiman in their club room. Hachiman is seen to visit Yui’s house, and they enjoy sweets with Yui’s mother.
With the prom finally happening and Yukinoshita ending her relationship with Hachiman, where will the story take us from here? Yui has herself spoken that she was aware of being a bystander in their story, so will she successfully change their perspective?
Because now Yui holds the trump card with Yukinoshita telling Hachiman to grant Yui’s wish. The story’s flow depends on Yui’s answer; she recognizes that the situation was unfair to the three of them, but as Haruno pointed out, she was the mature one who can adequately see things through.
3. Recap of Episode 8
I. Photoshoot at the Beach
Episode 8, titled “Wishing That, at the Very Least, I Don’t Make Anymore Mistakes,” begins with Hachiman and Hayato discussing the dummy prom. Hayato tells Hachiman that the Captain committee agreed to help the student council and begins his sudden confession of not helping Yukinoshita when her classmates avoided her.
Hayato also tells Hachiman that his way of doing things was wrong. Hachiman was thankful to hear that but reveals that he was doing it anyway to prove the relationship between him and Yukinoshita was not codependency! Yui and Hachiman gather on the beach with their friends to oversee further preparations for their prom.
II. Meeting with Haruno
Hachiman and Ebina take pictures to upload on their site with Yui and Yumiko posing as their models. The theme was High school girls playing on the beach!
Ebina and Hachiman exchange their thoughts on ‘a simpler way of doing things,’ but in the end, she tells Hachiman his way was relatable. Hatano and Sagami finish the test site at the game club and receive positive feedback from Hachiman and Yui.
After leaving Yui and Hachiman, meet up with Haruno at a café, asking her to leak the second prom’s information! Haruno taunts the two about the codependency thing, but Yui tells her that it was vital for them to be involved with Yukinoshita to prevent things from ending badly, instead rightly see through the end.
III. Checkmate to the Queen
Haruno agrees to leak the information smoothly and wishes them luck with convincing Yukinoshita mama. After school, Hiratsuka sensei calls out Hachiman, and they meet with Yukinoshita’s mother in the teacher’s lounge.
Yukinoshita’s mother quickly recognizes Hachiman’s fake prom scheme and tells him that it would be ineffective. But Hachiman knowing that his opponent wasn’t Yukinoshita’s mom but the stubborn PTO, plays his underhanded but wise move of making Yukinoshita’s mother, an influential figure, convince the PTO to permit the prom!
She agrees, in the end, plans to arrange a meeting with the PTO, along with Hiratsuka sensei. Haruno and Hayato discuss the matter relating to the relationship between Hikigaya, Yukinoshita, and Yui, while Hachiman goes back to the club room.
IV. Yukinoshita’s wish?
Hachiman tells Yukinoshita the news about her revised prom proposal being accepted. They argue over who won their competition, with both of them presenting points of accepting defeat to each other.
In the end, Hachiman tells Yukinoshita to be the winner, so she truthfully confesses her feelings to him and asks him to end this competition and their fake relationship. As the winner, Yukinoshita tells Hachiman to grant her wish by granting Yui’s wish.
At the bus stop, Yukinoshita and Yui meet each other and Yukinoshita tells her, she again went on to rely on Hachiman, but this time had ended things properly.
