3. Recap of Episode 4
I. A positive reaction on SNS for prom!
Episode 4, titled “By Chance, Yui Yuigahama Thinks of the Future,” begins with the students gushing over prom online and in the classroom after releasing the prom video.
Back in the club room, Yukinoshita, Hachiman, Yuigahama, and Iroha discuss the success they got at promoting the prom video. Iroha tells Hachiman to go through the pictures they needed to upload on their official page, but he feels embarrassed and tells that he might give an NG sign to every one of his photographs.
So Yuigahama chooses the photos that came out well. Yukinoshita expresses her gratitude to both Hachiman and Yuigahama and tells them there’s not much work left, so they were free to go, but if she requires more help, she’ll ask for it.
II. Komachi’s present
So, after leaving, Yuigahama decides to accompany Hachiman, who plans to buy presents for Komachi to celebrate her passing.
At the mall, Hachiman gets excited about the new coffee vending machine and clicks photos with it. They continue shopping for Komachi’s gift and chat about their future paths. Hachiman settles on making a cake from scratch, and they leave.
The next day, Iroha summons Hachiman and Yuigahama to the reception office, where Yukinoshita sat with Hiratsuka sensei, facing Haruno and their mother.
III. Mrs. Yukinoshita & the troubles she brings
They discuss the voices calling for the cancellation of the prom, the PTO members think it’s unbecoming of high school students to attend such a party, and the school alumnae have mixed opinions.
But her mother strongly emphasizes that the prom should be canceled as the minority opinion was requested by an acquaintance of their father, despite valid arguments from Yukinoshita and Iroha.
As she sweet talks and appears that she is considerate of every opinion, Hachiman grasps what Haruno meant when she said their mother was scary.
He figures out that this person isn’t someone to fight with logic and asks for the school’s stance on this matter. After hearing Hiratsuka sensei, Yukinoshita’s mother leaves with agreeing that further discussions should be made.
IV. Yuigahama knows it all.
They concluded to gather materials to persuade the PTO to make the prom happen. Still, Yukinoshita refused to get help from Hachiman and Yuigahama because this was something she needed to do on her own.
Haruno explains the other two who try to argue that if Yukinoshita does not do this on her own, their mother will never acknowledge her. In the classroom, Hachiman thinks of the time Haruno explained to him that the three of them were in a codependency kind of relationship, and Yukinoshita needed to become independent.
While heading home, Yui and Hachiman get news of the cancellation of prom, so he calls their sensei, she makes him speak the reason for wanting to help despite Yukinoshit’s wish.
After their conversation and giving his reason, Hachiman runs back to school, and Yui sheds tears on knowing things have started to move and understands this was how it should’ve been.
