2. Orb: On the Movements of the Earth Episode 6 Recap
The episode began with Oczy asking Badeni to help decipher the book. When he was approaching Badeni, he was asked to stop, since he was a mere mercenary. Badeni then asked Oczy if those documents were life-changing. To this, Oczy said they could very well anger the church, and this piqued Badeni’s interest. He took a look at the book but had mixed opinions about it. He asked a few questions about the owner of the book and his purpose, but seeing Oczy’s cluelessness, he decided to drop the case.
After this, we were shown a flashback from before Badeni was exiled. He was being reprimanded by his superior for being too capable at his work. Right after this, the scene diverted to Badeni being punished on a chair in a basement-like place. He was being asked yet again not to study more than what was expected of him, as it went against the church’s belief that there is no more about the gods or the universe that humankind can learn.
Badeni was quite adamant about quitting his passion for learning more, especially since the retrograde movements of planets were tracing lines that weren’t circular, as they believed it to be. When he was told to show the same passion for theology, he argued, saying that he was still trying to discover the beauty and logic behind what god had created.
In the next scene, Badeni stumbled across one of the banned scriptures that the church was safeguarding in the Abbot’s room. Out of his curiosity, he decided to open the book, and right at his moment, the Abbot walked in with a few men. He warned Badeni, telling him that since he hadn’t opened the book, he could still walk away unpunished. Badeni put his curiosity ahead of everything else and opened the book, only to get pinned down within seconds. He was immediately punished by the Abbot, who blinded one of his eyes.
This memory probably changed his mind, so he called Oczy back in and told him that he’d take a look at the texts, but he demanded Oczy to continue the observations that were being recorded in the notebook, so he asked him to observe Mars on that night, as Badeni needed it for his own research as well. When Oczy tried to mention how he couldn’t look at the sky, he was asked to stop joking around.
That night, Oczy was in quite a dilemma, as he was really uncomfortable looking at the sky. He thought about how he had no obligation to listen to the words of someone who was definitely going to hell. However, as he recalled, the two men who entrusted him with something had both died with satisfied faces; this made him doubt his own choices, so he pulled through, made the observations, and presented them to Badeni the next day.
Badeni, impressed on seeing the observations coming from someone inexperienced, asked Oczy to lead him to the rest of the documents. On seeing the notes, Badeni remarked that they weren’t life-changing, but they could change the whole universe. When he noticed that Oczy looked confused, he explained that the Earth itself was moving, and although it sounds bizarre, it is the most rational conclusion based on the observations made.
He then proceeded to explain why planets show retrograde motion. His logic was that if Earth is also moving along with other planets, it wouldn’t be odd for a planet to look like it’s moving backward even when it is moving forward, given that Earth and the planet have aligned in their orbits during their revolution during that period of time. Interestingly enough, this concept touches on Einstein’s special theory of relativity, although it wasn’t known or properly understood during that period of time. For anyone who hasn’t understood this, Badeni has explained it perfectly in the anime so do watch it again.
On hearing all this, Oczy had a revelation and started contemplating whether the earth was perhaps a part of the heavens. The episode concluded with Oczy finally finding the vast sky to be beautiful. With this, the episode and Oczy’s fear of the night sky came to a close.
3. What Will Happen In Episode 6 of Orb: On the Movements of the Earth?
We can expect Badeni to look closely at the documents he found in the box. This is obvious as Badeni is always thirsty for knowledge. This still doesn’t mean that he’s lacking interest in theology, though.
He will most likely be contemplating ways to have the church accept his ideas in order to show them the beauty of the gods and the heavens. History has shown us how the Church has treated many great thinkers, so we can’t expect Badeni to succeed with this so easily.
