Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Episode 4 Ending Explained

Only Murders in the Building’s investigation into the killing of Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch) takes an unexpected turn with Bev Melon (Molly Shannon) near the end of season 4, episode 4, “The Stunt Man.”

Bev was originally introduced to the Only Murders in the Building season 4 cast as a producer on the Hollywood film about Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez). Before the cliffhanger in “The Stunt Man,” her function revolved around the film and appeared unrelated to Sazz’s death.

That has changed now that she is seen inside the future home of the Sazz Pataki Impact Academy, which was revealed in a flashback as a secret passion project tragically abandoned before Sazz’s death.

When Charles, Oliver, and Mabel heard a noise from inside, they entered the dark, untidy, and unfinished building, only to find Bev, who held a gun at them and threatened to blow their heads off if they moved. This raises the question of why the Hollywood movie producer is present and threatening Charles, Oliver, and Mabel.

1. Why Is Bev Melon Pointing A Gun At Charles, Oliver & Mabel In OMITB Season 4, Episode 4’s Ending?

It is unclear why Bev is carrying a revolver at the unfinished Sazz Pataki Impact Academy, although it could be related to her employment as a Hollywood producer. Both Bev and Sazz worked in Hollywood, and while a high-powered producer and a stunt double may not appear to be two people who would meet paths, their job connections may have kept them close.

Depending on the nature of a potential relationship, Bev may have been involved in Sazz’s death, or she may be looking into it on her own.

Regardless of whether Bev knew Sazz, she may be investigating his death for the future film.

The death of Charles’ longtime stunt double and buddy adds a personal element to the film, prompting Bev to learn about and examine Sazz’s dream project.

Only Murders in the Building often takes seemingly threatening characters and moments and quickly reveals them to be comedic and harmless, and this could be the case at the beginning of the next episode, with Bev holding a prop gun that she found and playing an ill-advised joke on the trio.

2. Clues That Bev Melon Killed Sazz In Only Murders In The Building

While Bev could be a red herring, there have been hints that she could be Sazz’s murderer, one of the most notable being the timing of Bev’s auditions in “The Stunt Man.”

A flier for open auditions for the Only Murders in the Building film is conveniently pushed under the door to Mabel’s new apartment when she is not present, and Howard Morris (Michael Cyril Creighton) is meant to be sleeping there in case the mysterious Dudenoff returns.

This naturally drew Howard away from the flat and to the auditions, where Bev was present.

It seems weird that open auditions for a big-budget Hollywood film starring Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis, and Eva Longoria would occur at the Arconia.

Bev stated that Josh Gad had already been cast as Howard, and other well-known actors were most likely cast to play the other Arconia residents as well. The auditions may give Bev an excuse to be in New York City as she tries to erase proof of her role in Sazz’s killing.

Beyond the open auditions, there is also the matter of Bev conveniently contacting the trio about the movie the morning after Sazz died.

She may have been trying to draw them away from New York and to Los Angeles while Sazz was disposed of, thereby delaying their discovery of what happened.

Bev is also established to be bad with faces, as she described the Brothers sisters as identical twins even though they are not, meaning she could have killed Sazz when she intended to kill Charles and was unable to distinguish between their faces.

3. Why Bev Melon May Not Be Sazz’s Killer?

Despite the evidence pointing to Bev as Sazz’s murderer, it is too early in the season for such a dramatic announcement.

With six episodes remaining, there will undoubtedly be many more twists and turns before the true culprit is revealed, with more than half of Only Murders in the Building season 4 yet to be shown.

Why Bev is alone at the Sazz Pataki Impact Academy and what she knows may help the case progress, but she is not the end of the investigation.

It is important to remember that it was seemingly Charles, and not Sazz, who was the shooter’s actual target. Charles and Bev met for the first time this season and did not have any personal history together, making it difficult to see what kind of motive Bev could have for wanting to kill him.

Bev is more likely to be a red herring, although her real reason for being in New York and looking into an important part of Saez’s life will surely provide new insight into the ongoing investigation.

4. Is That Bev Melon In Only Murders In The Building Season 4, Episode 4’s Ending?

“The Stunt Man” featured a new character, Glenn Stubbins (Paul Rudd), who was revealed to be Ben Glenroy’s stunt double. When asked about Rudd’s surprise return to Only Murders in the Building, showrunner John Hoffman suggested that “we have dopplegängers all throughout the season,” which could imply that the character carrying the gun is Bev’s dopplegänger.

This could explain why she was displayed in the dark, to prevent showing tiny differences in her appearance from the real Bev.

This character may even be Helga, with the latest episode revealing her as the identity of the mysterious voice on the ham radio.

Helga is the former girlfriend of Rudy Thurber (Kumail Nanjiani), one of Only Murders in the Building’s Westies, and was said to be even too weird by their standards. While the Westies’ secrets have seemingly been shared, there may be more to Helga, especially if she is a dopplegänger of Bev looking into Sazz’s death. Only Murders in the Building’s Bev cliffhanger is the latest mystery that keeps the series compelling.
