Comedy-crime thriller Only Murders in the Building has finally returned. Nearly nine months since the season 1 finale, season 2 episode 1 premiered on June 28, 2022.
Titled Persons of Interest, the premiere episode takes liberty in setting the base for the rest of the season and does a great job. It gives our three leads their individual storylines, takes us deeper into the murder of Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell), and leaves us on a thrilling climax.
The premiere episode starts with Charles (Steve Martin) daydreaming about him enjoying the spotlight as Brazzos, while Oliver and Mabel, too, have become famous.
As the dream abruptly ends, we see that Charles is actually in a room with Detectives Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) and Kreps (Michael Rapaport).
Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) too are in other investigative rooms, being hammered for their supposed involvement in Bunny’s murder.
Mabel becomes a key point of interest when the detectives play a tape of her mentioning her violent dream in the podcast. She had shared that she frequently dreamt about a man attacking her, and in return, she stabbed him with a knitting needle.
Though the detectives try their best to lure something out of the trio, Mabel points out that they eventually have nothing on them.
Charles, Oliver and Mabel are let go but are advised to stop their podcast for their own good. After all, they’re not just commentators or wannabe detectives anymore – they’re people of interest in a murder case.
At least the three now do have paparazzi waiting for them and the world recognizing them. However, it’s not in any positive light.
Instead of being hailed as one of the true crime investigators (much like Charles’ dream of being famous), they’re now criticized for being murderers.
The trio then head back to their normal lives. Or, in the case of Mabel, try to. Charles and Oliver begin investigating Bunny’s murder and Mabel tries to warn them. It seems that Mabel has demons of her own as she is seen struggling with the memories of Bunny’s murder.
As Mabel wipes Bunny’s blood off her apartment floor, her mind takes her back to the bloody scenario.
Meanwhile, Charles’ agent informs him that famous producers want to reboot Brazzos, while another TV producer, Amy Schumer (played by Schumer herself) approaches Oliver in hopes of buying the rights for the trio’s podcast to adapt it into a series.
Simultaneously, Mabel is also contacted by Alice (Cara Delevingne), an art gallery owner. She invites Mabel to a gallery event. When Mabel arrives, everyone starts gossiping and clicking photos of her. Alice comes to the rescue and asks her to work with her at the gallery. Finally, a ray of hope!
Charles also meets with the producers in high spirits. However, they reveal that they want him to play Uncle Brazzos – not to reprise his role as the titular character.
Later, Cinda Canning (Tina Fey), another true crime podcaster and their rival, makes her own podcast titled Only Murders in the Building featuring the trio. She trashes them and tells listeners that she will start her own real-time investigation into the murders.
Cinda’s podcast reunites Charles, Oliver, and Mabel as they now have a newfound passion for clearing their names and bringing back up the reputation of their podcast.
As the trio sit around and discuss their future plan of action, they hear Bunny’s voice. Surprised, they break into Bunny’s apartment, crawling through the vents only to find that it was her parrot imitating her voice.
Now that they’re in the room, Oliver requests Charles and Mabel to help him by searching for the letters he sent to Bunny – in which he threatened to kill her.
Before the trio could find it, two other residents, Uma (Jackie Hoffman) and Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton) enter Bunny’s apartment to find a rare, million-dollar worth painting. They scream as they find that the painting is missing. The trio watches things unfold from the closet.
Mabel also discovered a private elevator and a secret door in Bunny’s apartment. Once out of the apartment, Charles and Oliver wish to restart the podcast. However, Mabel is still unsure.
The premiere ends on a thrilling note. Guess where the pricey painting was, if not in Bunny’s apartment? Charles’ living room. Charles calls Oliver and Mabel nervously, and it’s now clear that someone is trying to frame him.
Season 2 episode 1, is epic in the sense that it lays the groundwork for new mysteries and new unanswered questions.
Will the trio be able to clear their names? Will they solve all mysteries and regain their limelight? Only time will tell when more episodes of Only Murders in the Building releases.
