A One Tree Hill sequel is in the works on Netflix, and there are already many updates about the return of the 2000s classic. Debuting in 2003 on The WB (later CW), the series originally concerned the lives of high-school-aged brothers Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan Scott (James Lafferty) in the fictional North Carolina town of Tree Hill.
However, as the series continued throughout its nine-season run, other characters began to take focus, and the story matured. Though one of many teen dramas in the Aughts, One Tree Hill has stood the test of time.
1. Is the One Tree Hill Sequel Happening?
Several years after earnest calls for a sequel were put out by original stars Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton, it has been confirmed that Netflix is developing a One Tree Hill sequel series.
2. One Tree Hill Sequel Cast and Crew
Because the movie is still under development, the full cast of the One Tree Hill sequel remains unknown. However, two original talents have signed on, indicating that more will join in the near future.
Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton will reprise their roles as Brooke Davis and Peyton Sawyer, respectively, and also serve as producers. Danneel Ackles is in talks to reprise her role as Rachel Scott, and with Ackles also producing, she is likely to sign on. Early signs indicate that Chad Michael Murray will not reprise his role as Lucas Scott.
3. Upcoming Plot for One Tree Hill Sequel
Though all the details are being kept under wraps, the upcoming One Tree Hill sequel is said to take place 20 years after the events of the original series.
Brooke and Peyton will be the focus as they remain close friends and attempt to raise teenagers through the same life issues they had years before. The sequel, as expected, will center on the interpersonal issues of adults and teenagers, but if Burton’s previous words are any clue, it will be more representative.
With female voices finally being heard in the creative process, One Tree Hill’s sequel may be more than just a cynical nostalgia trip.
4. How did One Tree Hill End?
After being kidnapped for most of the season, Nathan (James Lafferty) is finally home with his wife and children. All “Naley” fans will be pleased that their story concludes happily. More than that, they have some fantastic moments throughout the series. The most prominent moment is a beautiful flashback to Season 1: Nathan gave Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz) a bracelet from a crackerjack box and told her, “Don’t say I never gave you anything.”
That moment is sweetly updated when Nathan prepares Haley’s favorite supper of mac and cheese and offers her a box of crackerjack for dessert.
Their son Jamie is trying to be as good (or better) at basketball as his father, prompting Nathan to draw him aside and have a conversation with him that his father, Dan (Paul Johansson), never had.
He informs Jamie that, while there will be expectations for him to excel at athletics, he has no obligation to anyone, including his father. He advises him to find what makes him happy and to be a nice guy, but he is free to do whatever he wants.
After the hell Nathan went through with Dan, Jamie is satisfied to see him be the kind of man Dan never was. It’s almost like a chance for him to heal his inner child and give Jamie the kind of love and support he and every child deserves.
Haley later shows Jamie the hole in the wall on the roof of the café where she and Lucas would write their hopes and predictions for the future. She passes the box down to Jamie and tells him to only write hopes and predictions that will make him happy.
His first prediction is that he will one day break his dad’s scoring title. And as we find out towards the end of the episode, he did just that. She then echoes a line Karen (Moira Kelly) speaks as she and Jamie stand on the roof and look out over the town: “There’s only one Tree Hill, Jamie Scott. And it’s your home.”
