Devil Fruits or Akuma no Mi are fruits of mysterious origin found in the One Piece world. These fruits grant unique powers to anyone who consumes them, but in return, the consumer loses the ability to swim.
One of the most prominent devil fruits in the series so far is the Mera-Mera no Mi, which was introduced with Portgas D. Ace and is currently consumed by Sabo.

The One Piece manga has revealed the design and the powers of the Mera Mera no Mi. However, it was never explained how Ace got the power of this fruit in the first place.
One of the One Piece spinoff novels, One Piece: Ace’s Story, Vol. 1, recently revealed how Ace first found the Mera Mera no Mi. While stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere with his first crew-mate, Ace found the fruit through sheer coincidence.
This prequel story begins with Ace stranded on a deserted island after a shipwreck. He was stranded there with Masked Deuce, his first crew member, who joined forces with him to build a raft and escape. With no expertise in ship-building, this duo failed a lot in making a floating vessel.
During one of their food hunts, Ace finds the Mera Mera no Mi with sheer luck. In the act of compassion, and ignorance of what the fruit actually is, Ace offered the fruit to Masked Deuce after taking a bite out of it himself.
This act of generosity proved useful as Masked Deuce was initially planning to kill Ace and claim the fruit for himself.
After his body catches fire spontaneously, Ace realizes that he has eaten a devil fruit. Through his experience of living with Luffy, he knew that if he entered the water, he would become incapacitated.
Using the powers of the Mera Mera no Mi, the duo was able to build a sturdy raft that helped them escape the island.
The presence of the fruit on this island suggests that the previous owner of the fruit’s powers must have died somewhere nearby.
As the island is deserted, it is possible that the previous owner was shipwrecked here and eventually passed away, which transferred the fruit’s powers to the closest fruit of the same type.
