One Piece: Is Marco stronger than King and Queen?

As far as powerscaling goes in One Piece, things are pretty standard given Oda’s intricate and well-thought-out world building.

We have characters’ innate Haki, their consumed Devil Fruit and the powers it gives them, their skill and training, race-based powers, and their experience on the seas. Other strong indicators are characters’ rank and status, their feats, their bounty, and their will to win.

Yonko commanders are essentially all a step below their Yonko captains. Marco was the Whitebeard Pirates’ first commander, second only to Whitebeard himself, while King and Queen are both part of the Beast Pirates’ All Stars, Kaido’s two strongest crew members.

Marco goes up against King and Queen during the Onigashima Raid in the Wano arc. Unlike the other Yonko commanders who haven’t gone against each other, these guys have legit had a battle – albeit a short one – so it is possible to tell which one is stronger.

Marco is stronger than King and Queen individually, but when it comes to a 2v1, King and Queen can take on Marco, as Marco himself implies in chapter 1006/episode 1022. Even then, Marco holds them off, and the duo beating Marco would be high diff without any interference.

1. How Strong are King and Queen?

King the Conflagration and Queen the Plague are the two strongest members of the Beasts Pirates after Kaido. Kaido himself is known as the “strongest creature in the world”, and until very recently, was unbeatable.

King and Queen are both Ancient Zoan Devil Fruit users and can turn into deadly dinosaurs at will. They are both tanks in battle with amazing endurance and durability.

They can wield weapons and also imbue them with Advanced Armament Haki. Neither of them is known to possess Conqueror’s Haki.

I. Queen

Queen’s plus point is that he is an engineer and has medical and technological expertise which he can use to his advantage.

He can replicate the powers of the Vinsmoke Raid Suits, as well as modify his hybrid form with his knowledge of Germa 66 and Vegapunk tech. His cyborg augmentations make his Brachiosaurus form more fatal than it already is.

He was able to create and spread his Ice Oni virus into the crowd in Onigashima. It took the joint efforts of Zoro, Chopper, and Marco to get the antibodies from him.

Later, Queen with the help of Charlotte Perospero, overcame Monster Point Chopper. He is eventually defeated by Sanji.

II. King

King is the last of the Lunarian race of people, which gives him the natural ability to create and manipulate fire, not just in his human form, but in his hybrid, and full Pteranodon forms.

A Pteranodon is a flying dinosaur, which also gives King the added ability of flight.

Additionally, King is a master swordsman, only eventually beaten by Zoro, after the latter figured out King’s secret of being a fire-producing Lunarian.

Canonically speaking, King is Kaido’s right-hand man and is thus considered stronger than Queen. But both are tenacious fighters, equally capable of dealing damage on even the strongest enemies.

Unfortunately, neither of them has significant feats.

2. How Strong is Marco?

Marco the Phoenix is formerly the first division commander for the Whitebeard Pirates, and notably Whitebeard’s second-in-command back in the day. Whitebeard himself was known as the “strongest man in the world,” and “the man closest to the One Piece.”

Unlike King and Queen, Marco has several feats.

He has taken on all 3 admirals multiple times, not just defending himself but attacking too. He has also battled fleet admiral Akainu twice, fought Monkey D. Garp, clashed with Silvers Rayleigh, and gone toe-to-toe against the Yonko Big Mom.

Marco has a high battle intellect due to his experience on the seas – he’s been around since the Roger Pirates were active, while King and Queen only joined Kaido later.

He also has proficiency over Observation and Armament Haki. However, he too, like King and Queen, doesn’t seem to have Conqueror’s Haki.

Marco’s biggest advantage is his insanely OP Devil Fruit. Marco ate the Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix, which is a Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit, the rarest type of Devil Fruit in the series.

He can turn into a huge flaming phoenix at will who can spit flames capable of injuring and healing, depending on the target.

Marco’s Blue Flames of Resurrection gives him the power of regeneration, no matter how severe the damage.

Additionally, Marco is also a pirate-doctor, able to heal and find remedies for various diseases and injuries.

3. Why is Marco Stronger than King and Queen?

Marco’s immense ability to recover from his injuries gives him a huge advantage over even powerful enemies like King and Queen.

Marco has used this ability in the face of the admirals’ wrath, even recovering after crazy-potent attacks like Akainu’s Magma Punch.

Marco’s Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit is stronger than King and Queen’s Ancient Zoan Devil Fruits according to the series lore. It is this that lets Marco battle King and Queen simultaneously in Onigashima.

Although the Calamities have the strength advantage against Marco, Marco’s regenerative powers are too OP.

In addition to a Devil Fruit type advantage, Marco has the flight advantage against Queen, and the speed advantage against King.

During the battle, Marco’s Bluebird attack proved to be way faster than King when he was in his bulky dinosaur form. Also, Marco was still in his base form when he attacked King with Bluebird and caused him to bleed.

King and Queen both sustained heavy injuries while Marco was seen only with light scratches.

In general, Marco’s battle experience and past feats like his efforts during the Marineford arc, along with his fight with 2 Yonko commanders, are indicative of his prowess.

Marco was the acting captain of the Whitebeard Pirates after the death of Edward Newgate.

We can say he is almost Yonko level (he’s not Yonko level) because the Gorosei actually suggest that apart from the 3 Emperors, Marco and the remaining Whitebeard crew are the only ones capable of defeating Blackbeard and his 2 Devil Fruits. It’s revealed later though, that Blackbeard was able to defeat Marco.

4. Did Marco lose to King and Queen?

Marco technically did not lose against King and Queen during their battle in Onigashima. Marco was able to hold them off, but he admitted that it’s not easy battling two people with bounties over a billion each.

Marco is exhausted in the battle. He has just fought Charlotte Linlin aka Big Mom, and is actively losing his stamina because he is healing several samurai on the Live Floor.

He is fighting the Calamities and making sure they don’t go after the Scabbards. He is also trying to cover and protect Chopper and Hyogoro while Chopper is making the vaccine against Queen’s Ice Oni. As the fight progresses, he also makes sure that Zoro gets to the Roof by tossing him through the hole.

He’s pretty much stretched thin, and on top of this, Queen and King are coming at him with everything they’ve got. Queen also wonders whether Marco is invincible.

King manages to cut Marco’s phoenix wing but Marco simply regenerates.

When Marco has reached his limit, he simply says so aloud. Perospero also notices that Marco is totally exhausted.

Even after that, Marco blocks King’s Flaming Punch from reaching the injured Zoro.

Still, it’s obvious that had the fight gone on, King and Queen together would have beaten Marco. King and Queen weren’t even at max power while fighting Marco; they go all out only later, when they battle Zoro and Sanji respectively.

But they would have reached that stage had Marco kept fighting them, and Marco would definitely have been beaten.

On the other hand, had Marco not been distracted by the chaos around, had he not expended his energy healing and protecting the others, we might have seen him reach his full potential too. It’s hard to say how that would have unfolded!
