‘One Piece Film: Red’ and ‘Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of a Dark Dusk’ were two of the most anticipated films this year. Naturally, the box office war between the two will be one hell of a show.
While both franchises have a firm hold on the otaku community, only one can reign on top and last weekend’s earnings gave us the answer.
‘One Piece Film: Red’ held the #1 spot by earning 122,947,620 yen (approx. US$838,000) with 90,000 tickets sold during its 14th weekend. The film’s total earnings are now a whopping 18 billion yen (approx. US$122 million) at the Japanese box office.

Eiichiro Oda has revealed a commemorative visual featuring Gordon, a new character who debuted in the film. The visual is drawn as a classic One Piece wanted poster with 18 billion berries as the bounty.
Even though the movie came out in August, it is still breaking the box office and having regular screenings. It even topped DC’s ‘Black Adam’ on its opening day in the U.S., which isn’t surprising when it’s One Piece we’re talking about.
Following this, ‘Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of a Dark Dusk’ went from #4 to #3 on the weekend but stayed at #2 in earnings.
The movie grossed 107,683,635 yen (approx. US$734,000) during its third weekend. It has earned 817,193,233 yen (approx. US$5.57 million) since its premiere on October 22.
Despite all the delays in its release, the film is doing pretty well, considering how it competes with a One Piece film at the box office. Also, let’s not forget how infamous the franchise is within the anime community.
Sword Art Online receives constant criticism for its anime and how it could have done it better. Seeing this, the franchise released the Progressive film series, retelling the story’s Aincrad arc with more accuracy and new details.
I hope they do it right this time.
It’s not easy to come this close in earnings to a One Piece film, so I highly suggest you all check out SAO’s new movie.
For those who still haven’t watched One Piece Film: Red, what are you guys waiting for?
