Episode 973, titled “Boiled to Death! Oden’s One-hour Struggle!” starts off with Oden requesting Kaido to give him a chance at life.

Kaido agrees to Oden’s condition, just to feed his amusement. He states that if Oden and his retainers, the Akazaya Nine, can survive in the pot of boiling oil for one hour, their lives will be spared.

Upon hearing this, without any hesitation, Oden jumps into the pot. His retainers rush to follow him into the pot expecting instant death. 

However, before they could jump into the pot, Oden breaks off the plank they were standing on and carries them on his back. Hence not letting them get burnt.

The people of Wano have come to witness the execution just to entertain themselves. They have come expecting Oden to die a quick death. 

However, to everyone’s surprise, Oden is not going down easily. They resort to mocking Oden for acting the way he is and tell him just to give up and die.

Shinobu is also present in the crowd. She cannot take it anymore when she hears everyone disrespect Oden’s name. She threatens to kill anyone who mocks Oden.

Shinobu proceeds to reveal the reason why Oden consistently danced naked every week in front of the capital. 

She mentions how Oden attempted to fight Kaido and Orochi. However, Orochi blackmailed Oden with the lives of the people he kidnapped as a tribute to Kaido.

Orochi gives Oden a choice. Oden can either choose war that would cause a lot of bloodshed or the lives of the people. 

Oden, being the kind and the naive person he has always been, chose the lives of the people, but in return, he is forced to dance naked every week.

With this revelation coming to light, the people of Wano are shaken. They are immediately filled with guilt and regret ever mocking Oden, who has always been the one protecting them.
