I. The Devil Fruit Called Smile

The current episode opens with the people of Ebisu laughing after witnessing Yasuie’s execution as they are unable to do anything else. The towns’ people finally reveal the awful truth behind the smile fruit.

Many years ago, Orochi had imported some kind of artificial fruit in exchange for the country’s weapons.

When this foreign fruit is consumed, the person will gain the ability of an animal and it will make you ferocious.

The success rate of this artificial fruit is only about 10% which means that if ten people consumed it, only one out of the ten would gain the abilities while the remaining would not see any modifications but will be stuck with the consequences.

As a side effect of the defective chemicals in the fruit, those who have eaten it cannot express their sorrow or anger and are only able to laugh.

They also lose the ability to swim. The townspeople talk about how Orochi only cares about the super-soldiers he gets through this devil fruit and doesn’t care about the side effects that they must live with.

The super-soldiers are those who gained the beastly abilities from the smile fruit, known as the Gifters whereas the other soldiers that are only stuck with the side-effects are known as Pleasures.

Orochi didn’t even leave the failed smile fruits that were bitten only once but mixed it in with the leftovers from the Capital where it was sent to the people outside Flower City who were dying every day due to starvation. He did this despicable act to create more Pleasures.

II. Toko’s Grief

Toko is stricken with grief after having witnessed Yasuei’s execution. She runs towards him and tries to fix him up with toad oil hoping that this would be enough to bring him back to life.
