Dr. Vegapunk, the hidden genius scientist, has finally revealed themself in chapter 1061 of One Piece, and you would have never guessed their identity.
Fans finally understand what Oda-sensei meant when he said that the final arc would unveil many hidden secrets. Vegapunk alone has uncountable scientific achievements in the series and was one of One Piece’s best-kept secrets, all until today.
Dr. Vegapunk makes her debut appearance in chapter 1061 of One Piece. Yes, it’s a ‘her’ because it turns out this mad genius is a woman, an incredibly beautiful one at that.
Luffy, Chopper, Jinbe, and Bonney are separated from the rest of their team, but they have no care in the world. (No surprise there.)
Bonney tried to explain to these boneheads that they are actually on Egghead, an island that is 500 years ahead in the future. In fact, Dr. Vegapunk’s research lab is on the same island.
The panel shifts to show the Strawhats who are trapped in the hands of a giant robot. Dr. Vegapunk appears to be controlling the robot as she makes observations of her creations. Turns out that the massive metal shark which had attacked the Strawhats was actually made by her and is a bit defective.
While her demeanor seems friendly, her next words prove that she still works for the World Government. The Strawhats have made friends with their enemies plenty of times before, and history might repeat itself, but Vegapunk’s motives will remain unclear till chapter 1062 is published.
Is the woman truly who she claims to be? A G-5 Marine stated earlier in the series that Vegapunk is an “old man” which led to fans believing he is an elderly guy. Oda-sensei is famous for weaving mysteries before revealing the actual identity of a character.
Will Dr. Vegapunk take Luffy’s side? If she does, her technology and brilliance will turn the tide. On the other hand, her loyalty to the World Government can lead to one of the toughest battles that the Strawhats have ever fought.
