Oda sure knows how to stir a room. The One Piece fandom is up in a frenzy after the leaks and additional spoilers for chapter 1053 were released.
Let’s just say, the new and final chapter before the hiatus has thrown all our expectations out the window. And this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
The only predictable bit about chapter 1053 is that it is crazy-exciting. A lot of things happen, including the reveal of new bounties, new Yonkos, one Ancient Weapon, and one mysterious Marine.
In chapter 1052, we saw that the Gorosei are alerted of what happened in Wano and that the borders of the country are still sealed. The enigmatic Ryokugyu enters Wano, although we only see his silhouette.
The leaks give us all the info we’ve been waiting for – and much, much more. Here is everything that goes down in chapter 1053!
1. New Bounties for Luffy, Kid, and Law
Monkey D. Luffy, Trafalgar Law, and Eustass “Captain” Kid are issued new bounties of 3 billion berries each by the World Government.
The 3 also get new photos for their posters.
I. Luffy’s Wanted Poster Gets Gear 5: Nika
Chapter 1053 begins with the Gorosei exclaiming why Luffy’s Wanted poster contains a photo of him in his Gear 5 form. They angrily ask the Marines who gave permission to print the photo, and also, why the initial “D” hadn’t been removed from Luffy’s name.
The Marine stutters that they got the photo from the CP0 agent called Guernica.
The next panel shows Morgans determined to show the world exactly what is happening. He says that Luffy looks mystifying and it is up to them to spread the picture around the globe. Not even the World Government and their propaganda can stop a story that’s this thrilling.
The entire population across the 7 seas is now going to know that Nika has returned to the New World.
II. Kid and Law Get the Same Bounty as Luffy
Even though Luffy is Joy Boy, the biggest threat to the Government, even though he Awakened the Devil Fruit long sought by them, even though he defeated Kaido on a 1v1, his bounty is the same as Kid and Law. This has really irritated some people.
Additionally, it took Kid and Law together to take down Big Mom, while Luffy put in most of the work to take down Kaido.
Luffy’s bounty saw a hike of a mere 1.5 billion while Kid and Law’s bounties jumped by 2.5 billion.
People can’t comprehend this, but if you think back to other bounty raises, it does make sense.
Luffy and Law’s bounties were increased to the same amount – 500 million – after they defeated Doflamingo in Dressrosa. And in that instance too, it was Luffy that did most of the work.
The simple logic is that, for the World Government, Luffy, Kid, and Law, are equal threats right now, because, by whatever means, each of them can be said to have the power to defeat a Yonko.
2. The Location of Pluton
Celebrations are ensuing all around Wano. The new shogun Kozuki Momonosuke has declared a festival for the whole country and a free grand feast for all the citizens.
While people are getting pumped, Nico Robin wanders down to the castle basement, the Poneglyph room that Brook had discovered earlier, where there is a large display of Kokeshi dolls.
I. Oden’s Dad is Still Alive
Tengu the swordsmith comes down the stairs and says that the doll collection is his. Eventually, on being questioned what he’s doing down here, Tenguyama reveals that he is the former shogun of Wano, Kozuki Sukiyaki, the father of Kozuki Oden.
When the War of Onigashima began, Sukiyaki was captured and imprisoned within the castle. By the time he was able to get out, Orochi had declared himself as the new shogun, and his son, Oden, had been executed.
Sukiyaki says that he wanted to commit seppuku or suicide then and there, when Robin interrupts him with something so unexpected that I almost stopped reading.
II. Pluton is in Wano
Robin says that the Ancient Weapon known as Pluton has to be somewhere within Wano Country. She mentions that she had read this information in the Poneglyph in Arabasta.
Sukiyaki replies saying, “Indeed, it is here.”
III. Sukiyaki Might Help the Straw Hats Find Pluton
We know that the Kozuki clan knows how to create and decipher Poneglyphs. This was the reason Roger had taken an interest in Oden in the first place.
Now that Sukiyaki is alive, we can agree on the fact that there is another person apart from Robin who can read Poneglyphs.
Additionally, Sukiyaki, being a Kozuki and a former shogun, probably knows more about Wano than anyone else. He definitely knows where Pluton is and might help the Straw Hats find it.
On a side note, will Momo have to give up his position as shogun because his grandfather is still alive? I don’t think so. Oda has made pretty certain that Momo is the rightful shogun of Wano.
Sukiyaki’s role now, will be connected to the Poneglyphs and finding the Ancient Weapons. Also, he will be the one to guide Momo, and also teach him the lost art related to the Poneglyphs.
Perhaps new Poneglyphs will be made containing information on Luffy, the new Joy Boy, to be left for future generations.
3. Ryokugyu Revealed
Meanwhile, in the former Prison Mine in Udon, Marine Admiral Greenbull aka Ryokugyu enters the scene.
I. Ryokugyu Sucks King and Queen Dry
King and Queen landed up together in Udon after being defeated by Zoro and Sanji respectively. Ryokugyu arrives to clean up the mess they have left.
We see a glimpse of Greenbull’s Devil Fruit powers – he’s basically a tree who can spread his roots and branches to sap up nutrients from living beings. And this is exactly what he does to King and Queen.
He sends branches that pierce all the remaining Beasts Pirates and straight up belittles the All Stars/Calamities by calling them mere commanders. He says that the Navy can’t afford to waste manpower to clean a bunch of bozos like them up.
II. Ryokugyu’s Identity
Ryokugyu is kind of a badass. One of his branches pierces a barrel of alcohol and he basically chugs/absorbs all of it. He tells Den Den Mushi that he should’ve let the booze age longer so it could be tastier and more potent.
He calls up his subordinates and tells them to send over a warship to Wano and also tells them not to inform Sakazuki about what he’s up to.
The next panel finally shows Marine Admiral Ryokugyu’s face – dark-haired, with sunglasses and a cigarette – looking as hard as he sounds.
Ryokugyu’s name is Aramaki, just as Sakazuki’s is Akainu. It is revealed that Aramaki yearns for Akainu’s approval, and that he has always admired his style and way of doing things: “No hald measures”!
He declares that he wants to capture Luffy himself to make Akainu happy with him,
“He’s sure to give me an “’attaboy’ if I bring him this brat’s head!”
4. The New Yonkos
The Government, along with revealing the new bounties, have also announced the names of the new Four Emperors. They are “Straw Hat” Luffy, “Blackbeard” Teach, “Red-Haired” Shanks, and “The Bombastic Clown” Buggy.
I. Kid and Law Aren’t Yonkos
The major point of contention in chapter 1053 is that Buggy of all people has been made a Yonko, and not Kid or Law, who defeated the Yonko Big Mom.
This fact has overshadowed the otherwise monumental reveal that our boy Luffy has finally been made a Yonko! I mean, sure, this was predicted, but it’s kind of insane how far Luffy has come.
But Buggy being chosen over Kid and Law tells us a very important thing: becoming a Yonko isn’t just about defeating other Yonkos. I’ll talk more about this in my next article about the New Four Emperors.
The point is, that while Buggy and Luffy have replaced Big Mom and Kaido as Yonkos, Kid and Law are equal threats to the Government since their bounties are the same as Luffy.
II. Buggy is a Deserving Yonko
On the other hand, Buggy being a Yonko makes complete sense – Buggy is Shanks’ equal, just as Law and Kid are Luffy’s. Luffy became a Yonko because Luffy is unique.
We have to remember that he’s just a kid. But given that he’s eaten the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, and has the power to defeat a Yonko, and has several other achievements like uniting the people, garnering territories, and directly opposing the Five Elders, Luffy was made the Emperor.
Kid and Law defeated Big Mom, that’s about it.
We don’t know what Buggy did in the duration of the Wano War, but it’s definitely big – big enough that it took him only 3 weeks to be made Yonko after his Shichibukai position was revoked.
5. Miscellaneous Info
- Chapter 1053, titled “The New Emperors” will have a color spread dedicated to the upcoming One Piece Odyssey video game.
- The Wano arc is not ending just yet. The previous news that One Piece was going into hiatus because Oda wanted to prepare for the final saga was a mistranslation.
Oda’s Twitter revealed that after the 1-month break, One Piece would be entering its final arc, which only means that the final arc of Wano will continue after the hiatus, not the final arc of the series.
6. About One Piece
