With all of the spoilers and leaks that we’ve seen, it’s evident that One Piece’s chapter 1053 is the craziest chapter of the Wano arc thus far.
The Ancient Weapon Pluton is revealed to be somewhere in Wano, Oden’s dad, Kozuki Sukiyaki, is still alive, Ryokugyu’s shows his identity, and Luffy, Kid, and Law now have a bounty of 3 billion berries each.
But perhaps the most shocking thing of all, is the announcement of the new Yonkos after the defeat of Big Mom and Kaido.
According to chapter 1053 leaks, Luffy, Buggy, Shanks, and Blackbeard are the new Four Emperors. Luffy and Buggy will be replacing Kaido and Big Mom. Kid and Law have not been made Emperors, despite the fact that they were the ones to bring down Big Mom.
This has caused an uproar among the One Piece fandom, with people literally seething that Law and Kid aren’t getting what they deserve.
At the same time, there’s a surprisingly bug – sorry, big – faction of people who are celebrating that Buggy is a Yonko now. But does it make sense?
Why weren’t Kid and Law made Yonkos?
Kid and Law weren’t made Yonkos because it takes more that simply defeating a Yonko to become one.
People forget what the concept of Four Emperors actually is. The Yonkos are typically four of the most powerful pirate captains across the 7 seas.
Powerful here does not simply imply strong; a powerful pirate is someone that has proven to have some influence on other people, someone who can exert their will on other crews, and cause notoriety (with respect to the World Government) all over the world.
Additionally, an Emperor must have a large and powerful fleet, have control of some territory, and be strong enough to take on the Marines, the 7 Warlords of the Sea (formerly), as well as other fellow Emperors.
This is why I believed that Kid and Law wouldn’t replace Big Mom back when they defeated her.
No one is saying Kid and Law aren’t strong. In fact, the Five Elders/Gorosei consider Eustass “Captain” Kid and Trafalgar D. Law as much of a threat as Luffy – they gave them both the same bounty as Luffy despite the fact that they had to team up to take down Big Mom.
Kid and Law may be individually really powerful, but do they have a running reputation of being unbeatably strong like Kaido? Do they have large fleets and territories like the Yonko they defeated, i.e. Charlotte Linlin? Do they have influence over other crews, communities, and tribes like Luffy?
It was Luffy that in fact convinced Law and Kid into an alliance. They would never have beaten Big Mom if it weren’t for the alliance.
So, yes, it does make sense that Oda decided not to make Kid and Law Yonkos. But does Buggy deserve it?
Is Buggy being a Yonko Actually a gag?
Buggy has always been a comedic character, treated with almost no seriousness. Some people – yes, the same ones who feel disrespected that Law and Kid didn’t get to become Yonkos – think that Oda literally made Buggy a Yonko as a joke.
This simply isn’t true. Yes, I agree, Buggy has been, well, lucky, when it comes to winning big, but one doesn’t simply become a Yonko based on luck or coincidence.
People even joked years ago on community forums about Buggy becoming a Yonko, and now the “joke” has become reality. Only, it’s not a joke. It’s not just for laughs. It’s not a gag. Buggy is indeed one of the Four Emperors of the Sea.
How does Buggy become an Emperor? Does he deserve it?
Some fans think that back when Shanks met the Gorosei in the Levely arc, he hyped up Buggy to them, so much so that the Five Elders decided to make him Yonko. If there’s a joke anywhere, it’s this.
There is no way Shanks spoke to the Elders about Buggy. Also, why would the Government listen to Shanks about making someone a Yonko? It makes no sense.
Speaking of Shanks, though, Shanks and Buggy were apprentices on Gol D. Roger’s ship back in the day. We can say that Shanks and Buggy are each other’s rivals in the same way that Law and Kid are Luffy’s rivals.
On top of that, Buggy is an ex-Warlord of the Sea. Shortly later, he lost his position after the Shichibukai system was abolished. He has confronted – nay, challenged – the Marines, and has fought against the most powerful ones, the Admirals Aokji, Kizaru, and Akainu.
Buggy is also incredibly crafty, and with the help of his Devil Fruit that enables him to split his body in multiple pieces, he can go against practically anyone.
Like Blackbeard, Buggy might not be the strongest guy out there; but in a similar way where Blackbeard does what he can to become more powerful. i.e., obtains the best Devil Fruits, Buggy does whatever he can to get more followers and hype himself up.
He is a clown, he is a showman – making himself seem larger, better, more powerful than he is, is what he excells at.
Buggy has influenced a lot of people around the Grand Line; he has so much influence that he used his infamy to evolve the Alliance into a New World-based, underworld organization called Buggy’s Delivery.
He is a charismatic businessman and has a lot of money, and money, as we all know, cannot be downplayed, whichever universe we’re talking about.
It is evident that Buggy has done something major in the time after he lost his Warlord title. It took Blackbeard one full year to be declared a Yonko after he lost his Warlord title. It took Buggy 3 weeks.
The World Government call him Buggy the Genius Jester and I don’t think it’s for nothing. There is something big happening outside Wano and we know nothing about it since we’ve been focusing on the Wano War and the Raid. My bet is that it involves Buggy.
It’s possible that Buggy Awakened his Fruit and caused some major mayhem. Buggy loves finding treasures so it might be that he’s found a major lead on the One Piece, which is the ultimate treasure.
It’s also possible that he had something to do with the Reverie incident. There are a lot of possibilities here, including that Buggy might be Rocks D. Xebec’s son.
There is a full month for us to speculate Buggy’s Yonko’s status, since One Piece will be going on hiatus after chapter 1053.
Whichever side of the fandom you’re on – pro or anti-Buggy, let’s not forget that Luffy is finally a Yonko!
The new Emperors of the Sea are going to make things pretty epic. I can’t wait to see what Oda does with them.
