Chapter 1038 sets up the finale for Big Mom vs. Kid and Law, which is one of main battles of the Wano arc after Kaido vs. Luffy.
The Beasts Pirates are almost done for, but Big Mom and her crew are still raging. The fandom is split up about the outcome of this one. Unlike the predictability of Zoro defeating King, and Sanji defeating Queen, the fate of Charlotte Linlin is pretty uncertain.
Most people believe that Big Mom has overstayed her welcome as a villain and want her crushed, while some believe she cannot be touched, especially by Eustace Kidd and Trafalgar Law.
Will Kid and Law defeat Big Mom?
The most likely scenario is that Kid and Law will manage to hold Big Mom off and prevent her from getting to the roof and joining Kaido.
Rather than defeating her outright, Kid and Law will stall Big Mom with their new Devil Fruit awakening and maybe even throw her off the island. I think the next time we see Big Mom will be directly in Elbaf.
From a narrative standpoint, Big Mom hasn’t really had much of a role to play in the plot of the Wano arc. Now, it’s fair to assume that the next arc is going to be Elbaf, and since Big Mom has had a history with the giants and Elbaf, it’s a greater possibility to have her dominate the next arc.
Additionally, Kaido is too big of a character to share his spot of defeat along with another antagonist. One Yonko defeat is already a big deal. (We can be 99% sure that Luffy will take down Kaido by the end of the arc.)
Another important thing to consider is that Luffy has had a beef with Big Mom since the beginning of time. He’s promised a number of people, along with Big Mom herself – twice, if I may add, that he will personally finish her.
At the same time, having Luffy defeat all the main villains might not be such a good idea. He’s already going to defeat Kaido, and ultimately, Blackbeard.
It makes more sense to have Kid take Big Mom down because he’s due for some redemption, especially after he left that fight with Kaido.
Law already had his moment to shine during Dressrosa and Punk Hazard, even though he lost to Doflamingo. His character development has been awesome.
Kid on the other hand, has a lot of potential but we haven’t seen much except his metal forms ramming into things. He will need a lot more than that if he wants to seriously injure Emperor Big Mom.
I don’t see Big Mom being permanently defeated by Kid and Law as of now; she has awakened Devil Fruit powers, advanced Conqueror’s as well as advanced Armament Haki. She’s a Yonko for a reason. Plus, there is no way Kid and Law defeat a Yonko before Luffy.
Big Mom vs. Kid and Law – the Battle so far:
law have essentially been holding their own against the monstrous Yonko since chapter 1000. In chapter 1030, we see that both of them have awakened their Devil Fruit abilities and for the first time are able to deal some proper damage to Big Mom.
But they are unable to master their awakening and it takes a serious toll on their strength and stamina. Big Mom, on the other hand, has full mastery over her abilities – Haki as well as Devil Fruit.
The Kid and Law vs. Big Mom fight has been largely dominated by Devil Fruit abilities. Big Mom, as we know, has one of the best Devil Fruit powers in the series, plus advanced Haki.
Kid and Law haven’t yet shown us whether they’re capable of advanced Conqueror’s and Armament Haki.
An argument can be made that Haki blooms during battle, so Kid and Law are bound to get at least some kind of Haki boost.
This is especially required since Big Mom got a power-up by sacrificing a year of her life span to increase her strength and size. She also created new homies using her Devil Fruit powers.
Kid and Law will only defeat Big Mom in the sense that they will either cause her to make a tactical retreat after Kaido is defeated or when she herself becomes injured.
Luffy told Big Mom that he will defeat her after he takes down Kaido; I think it’s possible that Kid joins Luffy to finish Kaido – because of his previous unfinished business with him – and Law fries Big Mom internally with his awakened Devil Fruit powers after mastering them.
This would solve the problem of Kid being underwhelming despite his hype, and Big Mom going down, but not out. She will return in Elbaf, where either Luffy or Usopp will kill her. After all, her enmity is with the Straw Hats and not the Kid Pirates or the Heart Pirates.
The Repercussions of Kid and Law Holding Big Mom Off
Okay, so what happens if Kid and Law actually succeed in holding Big Mom off? The thing that we also have to consider is that Kid and Law have been hyped to be Luffy’s equals, the next Yonko contenders.
There’s no denying that these two Supernovas are powerful: We’ve seen how Kid stood up to Big Mom in a 1v1 before Law joined him; even before that, he’s shown some real grit on the rooftop.
He could technically have the endurance and durability to actually defeat Big Mom, especially if he unlocks his Conqueror’s, and especially if he’s backed by Law.
We all know how much of a badass Law can be – remember how he takes Kaido’s Raimei Hakke or Thunder Bagua to the face and gets back up? Big Mom herself compliments Kid and Law saying that she hasn’t felt this much pain in years.
It’s entirely possible that Oda takes the path for another Worst Generation win. I know I said it’s unlikely that two Yonkos are defeated in one arc, but this is One Piece we’re talking about: anything can happen.
Luffy and Kid and Law should theoretically be able to defeat their respective opponents at the same time since they’ve been touted as equals.
If Kid and Law lose to Big Mom, it wouldn’t make sense character-wise; why would we care about anyone and anything else if it’s just Luffy taking all the Emperor wins?
I’d prefer some more damage dealt to Big Mom before Kid and Law can take her down – if at all. Kaido and the Beasts Pirates had the might of the Scabbards, Yamato, the Straw Hats etc beating down on him, and he’s not fallen yet.
But there is a real chance that Kid and Law defeat Big Mom because they haven’t reached their full potential yet and they’ve already managed to injure her.
Also, I’m just going to put this out there, but if Luffy could defeat Katakuri, a Big Mom fall at the hands of Kid and Law could definitely happen.
In fact, a lot of people will actually be turned-down if they don’t. Law’s not a killer, so Big Mom can definitely still survive despite being beaten, thus securing her role in Elbaf.
The fandom is going to explode whether or not Big Mom win/loses. What I can’t wait to see, is how Oda choregraphs the battle and story-line in a way that Kid and Law remain equal to Luffy, while Big Mom gets the mega fight she deserves.
