Tarantino Hints at Early Retirement and Ending Career on Ninth Film

Quentin Tarantino has said Once Upon a Time in Hollywood might be his last film. The prolific director began his career with 1992’s Reservoir Dogs, which won him critical acclaim. However, it was 1994’s Pulp Fiction that established him as an indie film darling and catapulted him to becoming one of the world’s most well-known filmmakers.

But it seems Tarantino now could be looking to retire from moviemaking. During his recent appearance on the Pure Cinema Podcast, not only did the director reiterate his desire to finish his career before he embarrasses himself by making a bad movie, but he also talked about not sticking to his famous “ten movies” promise.

I mean, most directors’ last films are f–king lousy. It’s making me think that maybe I should not make another movie because I could be really, really happy with dropping the mic on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Tarantino further went into details about directors who stayed past their prime in the film industry and chose to cite some examples from his own history as well. Read his statement below:

“Most guys have horrible last movies. Usually their worst movies are their last movies. And that’s the case for most of the Golden Age directors that ended up making their last movies in the late ’60s and the ’70s, then that ended up being the case for most of the New Hollywood directors who made their last movies in the late ’80s and the ’90s.”

Using Bonnie and Clyde director Arthur Penn as another example, Tarantino said,

“The fact that Arthur Penn’s last movie is Penn & Teller Get Killed is, like, a metaphor for how crummy most of the New Hollywood directors’ last, last films were.”

Tarantino’s ninth and latest film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, was a massive success, received praise from critics, and was also nominated for various accolades. Thus, the director’s contemplation of going out on it is perhaps headed the right way.

Furthermore, Tarantino has also expressed his desire to set up a family in his late fifties and retreat into a life of writing. To his advantage, Tarantino’s wish was fulfilled in February with the birth of his firstborn, Leo, and the new father might have found the perfect opportunity to start a new phase of his life. He is also set to release the first novel reworking of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood on June 29. 

Although the new change could fare him well, saying goodbye to one of Hollywood’s finest is bound to be hard for his fans. But considering the big maybe hanging, here’s hoping that Tarantino changes his mind and delivers on the promised tenth movie before bidding farewell.
