Everyone has their eyes peeled for the return of Cinda Canning and her podcast minions. Instead, Charles left the door open for Arconia’s star bassoonist and serial killer, Jan!
You’d think being locked up in prison meant no screen time. But Episode 5 brings in both Teddy and Jan, who are supposed to be behind bars. Each of them seems to have an agenda of their own as well.
But why is Jan getting in touch with Charles? Does she want to get back together with him?
In Only Murders in the Building S2, Charles reconnects with Jan in prison to help him solve Bunny’s murders. Their unhealthy relationship influences him to lower his guard, which may give Jan a chance to trick him again. It is also possible they may get back together.
As you remember, during Ep 4, Charles gets a bunch of missed calls from an unknown number. It’s easy to assume that they were either from the mysterious killer or Lucy who shows up in that episode. It’s only in the end that we realize that it’s Jan.
What begins as Charles reluctantly picking at Jan’s brain to give him a new angle for Bunny’s murder, soon turns into something wholly unhealthy. He no longer seems angry with her and even indulges when Jan reminisces about their time together.
But Charles isn’t the only one “straying” away. In the first few episodes, we see that all the three protagonists are involved in things that may tear the group apart—Mabel’s relationship with Alice, and Oliver’s deal with Amy Schumer.
Charles’ arc with Jan seems very much the same, where he might once again go to lengths defending his new, weird dynamic with her when the other two criticize him.
It is also possible that against all hope, Charles and Jan may get back together. But it would be incredibly boring since the show has already done this in S1. Not to mention, Charles would come out of it looking even more pathetic than before.
I have very little faith in Jan when it comes to most things, including her affection for Charles. As someone who may be clinically very sociopathic, her affections (if any) only ride off the attention he gives her. She enjoys the feeling of Charles needing her, despite it being toxic.
In my opinion, Jan is either toying with Charles just for some entertainment or/and so she can use him to lessen her sentence or even walk out of prison.
I wish I could say that Charles has grown smarter than to let her use him, but seeing as the resentment he felt towards her has almost dissipated, it seems like the worse is yet to come in their relationship.
Come on Charles, think with your head, not your blueberry bagels!
