2. Episode 1
Only Murders in the Building season 3, episode 1 is titled “The Show Must”, alluding to a popular theatrical credo. Many stalwarts, from Shakespeare to Freddy Mercury, have used the line to indicate different things.
In the series, the episode title indicates the return of the series for yet another season, Oliver’s return to Broadway, and also the return of the ‘Only Murders in the Building’ podcast, run by Charles, Oliver, and Mabel. It also sets up the theatrical setting of this season.
The episode begins with the death of Ben Glenroy, the lead actor in Oliver’s comeback theatrical production for the Broadway, Death Rattles. Charles, Oliver, and Mabel are back together to attend the first table read of the play, where we meet the new characters of this season.
In every OMITB season, the three musketeers focus on a new homicide, and we meet an array of different characters who may be related to the murder or the victim in various ways.
The first two episodes of season 3 also introduce us to a lot of characters. In the first few minutes, we meet Loretta Dunkins (Meryl Streep), who plays a Nanny in Oliver’s play, in a flashback. The episode leaves some hints about her past but does not reveal much.
The flashback also reveals the other characters, such as Kimber, Bobo, Ty, Donna, and Cliff Demeo, a mother-son duo who is producing the play. The star of the show is Ben Glenroy, a popular actor who is making his Broadway debut with Death Rattles.
Back in the present day, Oliver is worried about his career after Ben falls dead on stage. He invites his cast to his house to discuss and figure out the crisis. While some of the cast looks worried due to Ben’s death, some look quite pleased. Interestingly, nobody looks particularly upset.
Loretta shares an interesting conversation with Oliver, where she indicates that she would like things a little less professional and more personal between them. We also see Charles interact with Joy, where he mentions Lucy, his daughter. It seems like the two are in a relationship.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, Ben Glenroy appears in the party alive and kicking! In a long speech, Ben mentions he was dead for an hour but is back now and is a different person. He addresses every member of the cast and asks them to start afresh. After Ben leaves, Loretta calls him an asshole while she leaves the party.
Later, Mabel invites Charles and Oliver to her apartment for a chat, informing them that she will be moving out of The Arconia soon as her aunt has sold her apartment. The trio decides to use the elevator when Ben’s dead body suddenly falls on them.
In other words, now Ben Glenroy is actually dead, and the murder took place in The Arconia. So, the three musketeers can now officially investigate the murder and bring back their podcast!
3. Episode 2
In episode 2, we see more flashbacks featuring Ben preparing for his character in the play. The trio attends Ben’s funeral, where they meet Ben’s security guard, Gregg. Mabel decides to take his help and follow him to his apartment but ends up getting trapped with Charles as Gregg holds them, hostage.
Mabel and Charles assume that Gregg killed Ben, but later it is revealed that he actually loved him. Gregg assumed Charles killed Ben, and so he kidnapped him and Mabel to punish them. However, the police arrive on time, rescue them, and arrest Gregg.
Through a flashback, it is also revealed that Ben did not like Charles and wanted to punish him for what he did to him years ago. As per Ben, he had once been selected for a part in Charles’ show as a child artist. He was eight and wanted to support his family. However, after the first table read, Charles complained to the director about Ben’s performance and got him fired. Ben always held a grudge against him for ruining his confidence.
Meanwhile, Oliver receives some negative feedback about his play, especially because it “does not sing” and is unlike his previous plays, which are musicals. He suffers a minor heart attack due to the stress, and the doctor advises him not to take stress.
The episode ends as Oliver decides to give a musical twist to his play, while Mabel and Charles figure out another clue using a handkerchief Mabel stays near Ben’s body. They tell Oliver that Gregg did not kill Ben, and they suspect someone from his cast killed him. In other words, the trio is back, and their podcast will run again!
We’ll find out more about our suspects and delve deeper into the murder of Ben Glenroy soon, as the next episode will drop next Tuesday.
