NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1630 tested, it’s even slower than AMD Radeon RX 6400

AMD released the Radeon RX 6400 in January this year. The card turned out to be a major disappointment as it couldn’t even outperform the GTX 1650 which was released more than 3 years ago. Turns out NVIDIA has overthrown AMD for the biggest disappointing GPU this year, as the GTX 1630 is even slower than the AMD Radeon RX 6400 according to recent tests.

Yesterday we got a good look at the specifications of the latest mid-range card from NVIDIA, and now we have got some test results from TechPowerUP.

The GeForce GTX 1630 features the TU117-150 graphics card with 512 CUDA cores and is supposed to replace the GTX 1050 Ti which is near its end of life. The slowest Turing-based GPU from NVIDIA was expected to be better than the GTX 1050 Ti and even fight GTX 1650 but it’s not even good enough to overpower the Radeon RX 6400.

Relative Performance

According to the tests, the Radeon RX 6400 is around 57% faster than the GTX 1630 at 1080p gaming. This is quite disappointing as the GTX 1630 is just 10$ cheaper than the Radeon RX 6400, and despite using the same amount of power, the difference in performance is pretty large. The performance gap is even larger at 1440p and 4K gaming leaving little to no reason to buy this GPU if you were planning to game above 1080p resolution.

Performance per dollar

If we see performance per dollar, the GTX 1630 is even more disappointing.
It is one of the lowest GPUs on the list and to match with the Radeon RX 6400, it would need to cost around $100 which is simply not happening as the expected price for the GPU is $150. It doesn’t make much sense as the GTX 1650 is available at the same price but still offers 61% better performance.

Average FPS

Gaming tests show that the GTX 1630 produces an average of 24 fps compared to the 38 fps of both GTX 1650 and Radeon RX 6400. Furthermore, GTX 1630 does not even feature ray tracing, which although not expected in the $150 region, can be a disadvantage later on as new GPUs come about.
DLSS could have helped the lower-end GPU but sadly the GTX 1630 does not support that either.

AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 (FSR 2.0) was released a few days ago and can help lower-end GPUs to perform better. It was used in a mod for Cyberpunk 2077 to improve performance for lower-end GPUs and it can provide a lifeline for GTX 1630 users. This is quite ironic, how often do you see AMD technology helping NVIDIA GPUs like this?

With both AMD RX 6400 and NVIDIA GTX 1630 disappointing in the low-end market, users should rather go for GTX 1650/1650 super or AMD Radeon RX 6500XT. Team Green and Team Red are focusing on their high-end GPU releases later this year and it could give an advantage to Intel’s Arc Alchemist series to establish its place in the low-end market.
