James Cameron’s 2009 Avatar movie was a pioneer in the area of CGI cinema. Whether you liked the movie or not, the world of Pandora was undeniably captivating. Now, it seems we will get a new look at the alien world through Avatar: Frontier of Pandora. One of E3’s biggest surprises, Ubisoft’s sequel to the original game based on the movie, looks to return fans to Pandora ahead of the release of the movie sequel.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a next-gen console exclusive, much to the disappointment of many fans. This means the game can take advantage of the new tech and bring revolutionary new systems and features. One of the most notable is the advanced AI players will encounter when exploring the world of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
In a tech showcase with IGN recently, Alice Rendell, Lead Narrative Realization Designer, went into detail about how the AI in the game will function. She said that as the game uses Ubisoft Massive’s Snowdrop engine, known for its use in the Division franchise, the NPCs will react much more realistically to the environment.
The showcase didn’t expand on the details, but Rendell provided examples of NPCs reacting to the time of day, weather, player progression, and even the plants surrounding them. Given that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora looks visually stunning, we’re sure the game is making full use of the Snowdrop engine’s capabilities.
Nikolay Stefanov, Technical Director of Programming, during a later interview with IGN, gave an example of how the tech could work with regards to giant creatures. He stated that the large creature could walk carefully around plants and trees when it’s calm but bulldoze through them when it is in a state of panic.
While the game has several great features, the NPC’s realistic reactions can help better the immersion into the game and make Pandora feel genuinely alive.
It’s exciting to see what else Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will reveal as we get closer to the launch date. The game still hasn’t received any launch window other than sometime in 2022, but many fans have been wondering if the game will release before or after the next Avatar movie. We’re hoping Ubisoft drops a release date soon so we can mark our calendars and ready our gaming budgets.
