Spider-Man: No Way Home was the complete package filled with action, drama, emotions, nostalgia, and more. Tom Holland knocked it out of the park with his performance not just as a superhero character but even as Peter Parker.
However, one significant aspect that stood out for me was Dr Strange’s involvement in the entire film. Although he appears just for a couple of battle scenes, they are more than enough to shed light on how powerful he is as the Sorcerer Supreme.
In fact, we still are barely scratching the surface, and more shall be unravelled in Dr Strange 2, aka Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So what powers are shown in No Way Home, and how truly powerful is the Sorcerer Supreme?
No Way Home showcases Dr Strange wiping the memory of Peter Parker from the entire world. We also see the Sorcerer Supreme send people back to their own universes and repair the multiverse’s boundaries.
In the first half of the film, we see Dr Strange cast a spell where only a few people,up and opens up other universes’ boundaries, such as Ned, MJ, Aunt May, etc., remember who he is and the others forget Peter Parker completely. However, thanks to Peter himself, the spell gets messed and opens up the boundaries of other universes.
There are people such as the Green Goblin, Dr Octopus, Sandman, etc., entering the universe searching for Peter Parker. However, despite the spell going awry, it depicts Stephen Strange’s power as the Sorcerer Supreme over space and time.
To give you perspective, getting an entire world filled with billions of people to forget who you are is no joke, and the Sorcerer Supreme is able to conjure a spell with rather ease.
Furthermore, once the spell goes awry, he is able to teleport people into their own individual prisons in the underloft of the Sanctum Sanctorum, which means he has the power to not only open portals across the universe but also teleport people in a split second.
If this wasn’t enough, we also see him come up with a spell that would send all the beings from the parallel universes back to their respective worlds by creating a box within which the energy from the spell gone wrong is stored.
As we all see in the film, Green Goblin blows up this box with his pumpkin bombs, due to which the spell unleashes itself into the universe and shatters it. Beings from the multiverse enter this universe searching for Peter Parker as Dr Strange tries to stop them from entering.
We see this in the scene where the entire sky is shattered and torn as white apparitions try to enter the universe in search of Peter. However, Peter suggests that he cast a reverse spell where the entire universe forgets who he is and make it as if he never even existed.
Dr Strange is able to cast this spell within a matter of seconds or minutes at best and thus repairs the broken multiverse. At least that’s what they show.
However, all of this is a mere glimpse at what he can do. We find this out in the end credits scene where we see Dr Strange and Wanda Maximoff try to fix the multiverse problem. He seeks Wanda’s help because, as it turns out, she understands more about it than the Sorcerer Supreme himself, and as Agatha Harkness mentioned, she is far more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme.
As an audience, I’m still unable to wrap my head around the Sorcerer Supreme’s power itself, let alone understand what the Scarlet Witch is capable of. This shows how little we know about the true potential of both these characters, who, by the looks of it, possess powers that we’ve never seen before.
I guess all we have to do is wait for the trailer to get more insight into these arcs, and maybe then I’ll be able to fathom everything that’s going to come my way.
