A couple of days ago, a Bloomberg report brought the news that the next installment in Ubisoft’s Assasin’s Creed franchise will be a live service title much like Destiny, Anthem, and Call of Duty: Warzone.
Naturally, this disappointed many long-term fans who have always enjoyed the single-player focus of the series.
However, a clarification from Jason Schreier, the author of the Bloomberg report cited above, may give fans some hope. Expressing that readers may have misunderstood his article, Schrier took to Twitter to explain that there will likely be a solo narrative that will be “a part of Infinity.”
Schreier also dispelled the notion that AC Infinity will turn out like Anthem – the BioWare title was highly anticipated before release but failed to meet the expectations of publisher EA and those of the fans. This led to the scrapping of most of its planned support.
Additionally, Schrier backed Ubisoft’s plans for a live AC title. He believes that if the game is a hit, Ubisoft could experiment with smaller content and not feel the need to make every AC title an extended affair filled with hours and hours of gameplay. This could mean that we won’t see a new AC title every two years, which has been a longtime strategy for Ubisoft.
It’s important to note that AC Infinity will be the first live service title in franchise history, so there are risks involved. Live service titles require support consistently to keep fans engaged, which naturally requires a lot of commitment from the developer.
But that does not mean failure is guaranteed – Fallout 76 is an excellent example of how a game overcame a poor launch with a series of significant updates.
Not much is confirmed about Assasin’s Creed Infinity with regards to gameplay. However, Ubisoft revealed in a blog post that the game will be a collaborative, cross-studio project between Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Quebec.
According to the company, the partnership between the two studios “will guide, grow, evolve, and define the overall future of Assassin’s Creed.”
Although the future of many of the employees at these studios might be in question. Several of them have been accused of sexual harassment and continue to remain employed in leadership positions.
A spokesperson claims that Ubisoft has investigated every allegation and said employees “would not remain at Ubisoft if results of investigations warranted termination.”
