Another sci-fi black comedy has joined the list of shows that were canceled during the lockdown. Amazon Prime Video has not renewed Gillian Flynn’s Utopia after the first season. The series debuted in September with a questionable storyline and was met with not-so-positive reviews from fans and critics. It seems like Amazon has heard the voices of the people.
Utopia follows a gang of young adults who come across a graphic novel called Utopia online. As they bond over their obsession with the comic book, Becky, Ian, Samantha, Wilson Wilson and Grant realize that they have become the target of a shady organization, and the responsibility of saving the world is upon them.
Gone Girl writer Gillian Flynn has adapted the show from the British series of the same name. The original series, created by Dennis Kelly, is a fan favorite and is considered to be an almost perfect show by many. Naturally, a faulty remake was not appreciated by the viewers.
Are negative reviews the only reason behind the show being canceled? It turns out Utopia might be another example of a show about a pandemic in the smack middle of a pandemic- aka the ones that no one wants to watch at the moment.
Viral diseases and pandemics play a major part in the first season of the series and it is possibly because of this story arc that the show was dropped.
The first season of Utopia stars Ashleigh LaThrop, Dan Byrd, Jessica Rothe, Sasha Lane, Christopher Denham, John Cusack, Rainn Wilson, Corey Michael Smith and others.
