No Macs with the Devs, No Valheim Port for the Mac!

Currently, Valheim is only a PC exclusive though there is a mod in beta stage which allows you to experience the game in VR. However, that is the extent of its compatibility currently, and even though it’s on PC, there are no versions that can be run on either Mac or Linux. Developer Iron Gate recently let us in on why this is currently the case.

The Viking survival game which had been at the top spot of Steam’s Top 10 Seller list for six consecutive weeks, was made by a team of just five people. It does have that game development from a garage feel to it (they do have an office, but you get what we mean). As such, the reason there is no Mac port as yet is that the devs don’t have access to a Mac in the first place! They however are not ruling out the possibility of one in the future.

We don’t currently support Mac because we don’t have a Mac computer at the office. Adding Mac support and debugging and testing would take a lot of development hours that we don’t have at the moment. In the future, it might be possible to add Mac compatibility.

Regardless, Valheim has been a massive success on PC, so the devs aren’t going to be losing much by not porting it to a Mac right away. While it would be great for Mac users eager to delve into the Norse wild lands, the devs just don’t have the resources or the time to make it happen. So mac users, unfortunately, will just have to wait.

Fans are also asking for the game to be ported to PlayStation, Xbox and the Nintendo Switch. But the reason for that process not having begun as yet is very similar to the Mac situation, and outsourcing to another studio may cause more problems than they intend to solve.

So, for now, Valheim remains a Windows PC exclusive, and most likely will be so until it’s full launch (remember, it’s still in Early Access phase on Steam). Once the launch happens, the team may have more time on their hands to work on ports for other systems.
