The Nintendo Switch has seen a lot of success since its release back in 2017. In fact, it even outsold both the Xbox Series X|S and the PlayStation 5 in the previous quarter.
The compact design and an impressive library of games have been the major selling points for the system. But it’s not been a perfect ride.
The Switch has had a few hardware-related issues, most notable and widespread being the infamous Joy-Con drifting. Now, it seems Nintendo has finally addressed the issue.
While the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons have been a staple in the console’s marketing, the controllers have had a persistent control stick drift problem.
An issue that will digitally move the stick in one direction without the user input can be massively detrimental when playing a game. Many Switch owners have reported this problem, and Nintendo seems to be working on a permanent fix.
The information comes from Twitter user Chicken Noodle Gamer. When they were disassembling a new Legend of Zelda-themed Joy-Con, they noticed two little strips of foam placed on the inner, top, and bottom ends of the analog stick.
These foam strips indicate that pressure is put on the control stick to hopefully prevent controller drift.
Another Twitter user, Spawn Wave, later backed up this observation.
However, Spawn Wave mentioned that the foam strips were present in a Joy-Con purchased a couple of years ago.
So, for now, we don’t know if these foam strips are either the cause or cure for the Joy-Con drift, but it does show that Nintendo is actively trying to figure out an answer for the problem.
As of now, controller drift is the most prominent hardware problem plaguing the Switch. This is to the point where even the OLED Switch may suffer from this issue.
Nintendo is also facing numerous lawsuits due to the prevalence of the controller drift issue, many of which have taken place across different countries.
So, it goes without saying that Nintendo stands to lose a lot if it isn’t fixed. Given the number of highly anticipated games coming out for the Switch over the coming year, we’re hoping a fix is found soon so we can enjoy them without a hitch.
