Nintendo Switch was the Top Selling Console in the U.S. in Q1-Q2 2021

The upcoming Steam Deck may be a formidable competitor, but the Nintendo Switch remains a force to be reckoned with, according to a console sales report by American Market Research Group NPD.

In the first half of 2021, Nintendo’s handheld console was the best-selling gaming platform in the United States in both unit and dollar sales. While the dollar sales cake for June 2021 went to the new-gen Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch came out on top in dollar sales overall. The report also highlighted that the PS5 remained the fastest-selling console of all time in the U.S., undisputed since March 2021.

The month of June was quite a period for video game hardware as sales jumped by an astronomical 112% year-on-year. As a result, the total dollar figure clocked was $401M. According to NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella, this is the highest total achieved in June month since June 2008, when sales reached $617 million.

The data also showcased the top-performing games for June. PS5-exclusive Ratchet & Clink: Rift Apart topped the chart while Mario Golf: Super Rush placed third. It’s worth mentioning here that dollar sales for Super Rush during launch month were the highest achieved by a Mario title in history. The top five best-sellers for June also included Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, MLB: The Show 21, and Scarlet Nexus.

While there were games from other publishers on the list, Nintendo titles maintained their dominance.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe held onto 7th place in June 2021’s software sales chart, while Animal Crossing: New Horizons dropped from 9th place to 11th. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate rose by one position from 14th to 13th, while  Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury dropped two places from 13th to 15th. Nintendo super-hits Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Pokémon Sword & Shield were also in the 18th and 19th places, respectively.

The Switch dominated in the U.K. and Japan earlier this year, but with the new Switch OLED on the way, Nintendo might just break those records too. Hopefully, the company will also launch many more exciting titles like the upcoming Metroid Dread to keep this good run going.
