The camera is once again rolling for the ladies in Sex and the City as it embarks on a new chapter via reboot And Just Like That… Since Kim Cattrall won’t be returning, her spot is taken up by newcomer Nicole Ari Parker.
One of the first few pictures from the sets comes through the courtesy of Sarah Jessica Parker, who posts an image of the gang hugging. Filming too seems to be well underway.
Sex and the City was a sensation to behold with its bold exploration into women’s friendships and the intimate, often unspoken aspects of their lives. The successful TV series also gave way to equally well-received movies.
But what was once avant-garde for its time has to now catch up with where society and women are at, two decades later. As original cast SJP, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon return to their characters, it will be indeed interesting to see how the franchise takes the story forward in today’s understanding of gender politics and sexuality.
Cattrall, whose Samantha played best friends to SJP’s Carrie won’t be returning due to a personal feud with the latter.
Still, Nicole Ari Parker’s arrival, alongside other POC and queer reps Sara Ramirez, Sarita Choudhury and Karen Pittman is one I’m waiting to see on screen. It gives the show a chance at truly being intersectional.
A release date for And Just Like That… on HBO Max hasn’t been announced yet.
