SpongeBob SquarePants has been on Nickelodeon for over two decades and as per recent renewal deals, is not going away anytime soon.
The TV network has now given the franchise a total order of 52 episodes.
They are broken up as: an addition of 13 episodes to Season 13 for SpongeBob SquarePants, a backorder of 13 more episodes to the current Season 1 of The Patrick Star Show and Season 1 and 2 (each of 13 episodes) of the prequel Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years.
The choice of renewing the spin-offs has been done in good faith, as The Patrick Show has already taken the number one spot for Kids 6-11 across television. Similarly, Kamp Koral is one of the most-streamed original children’s shows on Paramount+.
The current season of SpongeBob will round up having 26 episodes, which had resumed airing in April 2021. With a backorder added, we’re sure that the optimistic sea sponge will continue his reign with more seasons too.
They usually say don’t fix what’s not broken, and with a successful (and not to mention, on-air) show, spin-offs can be an iffy matter. Nevertheless, both spin-offs take us to different scenarios we couldn’t possibly explore at length in SpongeBob SquarePants.
The Patrick Star Show has a young Patrick, living at home with his parents, where he hosts his own talk show. On the other hand, Kamp Koral takes us back to SpongeBob’s childhood years where he spends his summer at said camp. Both shows, nothing short of cute, bubbly animation, also show the characters closer to the age of their targeted audience.
To keep the legacy going, the SpongeBob franchise has no dearth of popular characters (many who have shaped pop culture like no other) that can have spin-offs of their own. I’d even say a Squidward show is long overdue.
