Nickelodeon has reported the launch of Avatar Studios, a section of the TV channel focused on creating more content for the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise. Avatar, which aired from 2005 to 2008, has been lauded by critics and has gained a massive fan base from all generations.
The show narrates the story of a boy named Aang, who is the sole survivor from his nation, and the last Airbender. Venturing out on a journey along with his friends, he is the only hope to bring peace to the world. The show’s success also inspired a sequel called The Legend of Korra and a live-action movie.
Netflix’s debut of Avatar last year exposed it to its biggest audiences ever. It was the streaming service’s most-watched show under the kids’ category in 2020, which helped propel The Legend of Korra to quite the success, as well.
Aang’s narrative, thus, has procured a lot of interest by audiences. Netflix, which is currently developing its own Avatar series, has kept a steady pace due to many obstructions. The most severe of these was when the show’s creators announced their departure due to creative differences. Now, it seems like another studio is picking up the series.
Nickelodeon, which announced the opening up of the new division exclusively for the franchise, has revealed that production will consist of movies and TV shows set in The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra universe. Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante will be serving as co-chief creative officers and will work under the Animation head of Nickelodeon, Ramsey Naito.
Furthermore, it has also been announced that the studio’s first project will be an animated theatrical film, which is scheduled to go into production by the end of this year. Plot details haven’t been revealed yet. But it is clear that the franchise has a bright future ahead, and with Nickelodeon taking over, it’s passing on to good hands for now.
