Ever since its release last year, New World has been facing a plethora of issues that make playing it a tedious grind. From constant disconnection, long wait queues, and unbalanced gameplay, Amazon’s MMO has not been the very best first offering from the studio. This is reflected by the player base that is starting to decline once more.
We had earlier reported that the New World player base had halved since release, and this was back in November. Cut to today, and the game is again experiencing an exodus of people, this time on a massive scale. The game started with over 340415,000 concurrent players on Steam and is now down to around 70,000 on average. As of writing this, there are currently 60,707 players in Aeternum, according to Steamcharts.
This is a huge issue for an MMO which requires people to be present to make the game more fun. PvP is a big part of the game mechanics in New World, so such a shortage of players to go up against leaves many of the servers feeling like ghost towns. Given this, players are once more asking for a server merger so that there can be more players in a single world.
The server mergers started late in December and helped boost the worlds’ player population. The two mergers that occurred significantly reduced the number of servers players could access, but those same players are now asking Amazon to consider the action again so that the game doesn’t feel empty.
Reddit user jotakl said, “Some [servers] in peak time barely get 200-300 players, others have 500 or so. Would be cool to have a new merge.” Others have stated that there could be another big drop in player numbers next week with the release of Lost Arc and Elden Ring. One user suggested that Amazon make New World free-to-play to improve the player count.
There is some good news for New World as the Winter Convergence event has been extended to January 25th “due to the fantastic turnout.” This means players have three more days to gather event tokens to earn event-exclusive cosmetics.
