While MMOs can be a lot of fun and allow players worldwide to play and interact with one another, one of the most significant downsides is the frequent maintenance downtimes they experience. This makes the game briefly unplayable and is often worth it for an overall better experience. New World is no exception to this, but European players are not happy with how the studio is going about their maintenance breaks.
Players based in Europe are annoyed that the downtimes occur in the middle of the day instead of late at night when the least number of players would be impacted.
This was brought up by Redditor Physics_Total, who noticed that Amazon seems to be repeatedly scheduling maintenance for 1:00 PM on Wednesday on the EU servers, even though the same maintenance is applied at 3:00 AM for the North American servers.
A similar incident has occurred during the beta, and while Amazon promised the issue would be addressed, it seems the company has not followed through.
In the post, the Redditor questions why Amazon Game Studios – based in North America – would decide to work on EU servers’ planned maintenance in the middle of the day.
The time zones would suggest that Amazon is not following the guidance of other big MMOs, which prepare their scheduled downtime towards the end of the workday or at different times for each region.
The New World launch itself wasn’t global, so Physics_Total wonders why the planned maintenance was.
MMO servers have been noticeably biased towards North American servers in the past as well. Riot Games was repeatedly accused of favoring the North American League of Legends servers over the others.
While New World is not as bad as Riot, Australian gamers have also complained about having trouble with maintenance. According to many users, the Australian servers keep getting hit with maintenance ranging from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM, all of which makes it very inconvenient.
Many users have complained about how long the downtimes are, with maintenance time for New World sometimes going as long as seven hours or more. Other users have pointed out that EU servers appear to be the lowest on the priority list and are often the last region to come back online after planned maintenance.
