New World is a game that requires constant updates, and Amazon Game Studio is well aware of this fact. The developers have released a lengthy video on the December update, which outlines the changes and additions coming to the MMO game. The update is looking to solve several gameplay bugs, and issues players have been facing since launch.
The video was posted on the Play New World channel and featured Rich Lawrence, the studio head. He admits that in the pursuit of fixing glitches, the changes made to the game often resulted in more issues, which caused the reviews on Steam to dip. He goes on to say,
What we’ve been trying to do is balance new features as much as we can in with our fixes. And what we’ve discovered is we have a rate limit. We are going too fast, honestly.
Rich Lawrence
Lawrence stated that the team would be focused on ensuring the patches are fully ready for release and will slow the output pace for the sake of quality and more analysis. This might result in fewer patches overall, but the patches that release will be larger and have fewer bugs.
Regarding the additional content coming to New World, players can expect Mutators or weekly modifiers to enemies in the game’s expeditions (or dungeons), resulting in more obstacles for the players to avoid. Some examples of enemy types are the exploding foes that cause area-of-effect damage or those that can curse players and disrupt abilities or skills.
New weapons such as the Blunderbuss, a long-range focused musket, will be arriving “pretty soon,” according to Dave Hall, the player’s experience lead for New World. There will also be a new greatsword which will include a stance-switching feature. However, those hoping for daggers will have to wait a bit longer as Hall stated the weapon is “near the front but not quite there yet” when it comes to which weapon the team will add next.
The video also goes into some detail about the changes coming to New Word’s main storyline. Rob Chestney, narrative lead, says the team will finish the “first chapter” of the main story soon, and the quests will continue to be updated to include new features such as destructible objects. Quest lines associated with specific trade skills, fast travel changes, including adding more fast travel shrines, and undiscovered shrines being viewable on the map for easy discoverability are some of the other changes discussed in the video.
The video is an hour and a half long, but the amount of information revealed makes it a worthwhile watch for any New World player interested in knowing the game’s future. For those looking at understanding the new content currently available, there is the game’s first seasonal event, the Winter Convergence Festival, which adds daily tasks, limited-time holiday-themed rewards, and requires players to take part in specific activities to up their rank.
