Meet the New Villains in the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Trailer

The new trailer for the Doctor Who 60th anniversary special released by BBC unveils three new monsters or villains.

The BBC’s Doctor Who, which will complete 60 years in 2023, is the world’s longest-running science-fiction series. Showrunner Russell T. Davies has recently brought back previous stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate for the series.

The 60th-anniversary special trailer features the Thirteenth Doctor going through a sort of ‘degeneration’, returning to one of his previous forms. Interestingly, the Doctor’s clothes also seem to have regenerated which has happened for the second time in the history of the franchise.

For the first time in 2022, the BBC has not released a new episode of Doctor Who during Christmas and New Year. Instead, the BBC released a trailer for the Doctor Who 60th anniversary special. The trailer does not reveal anything more than what we already knew from set photos and previous information.

However, the beautiful trailer introduces three new villains, who will be new to most of the audience. But these villains actually have a deeper connection to the franchise. Check out the trailer below –

The Celestial Toymaker

The Celestial Toymaker

The most exciting out of the three villains introduced in the above trailer is definitely Neil Patrick Harris’ character, whose identity is yet to be confirmed officially. Showrunner Davies, however, has confirmed that he plays one of the villains from the series.

The photos from the sets clearly indicate that Harris is playing a toymaker which leaves us with one option: Neil Patrick Harris is playing the Celestial Toymaker, a character who was last seen on screen as early as 1966.

The Celestial Toymaker was originally played by Michael Gough. The cunning yet enigmatic toymaker has absolute control over reality. He lures people into his own dimension, after which they are forced to compete against him. If they win, he sets them free but if they lose, they have to become his pawns.

The Celestial Toymaker is one of the most popular villains of Doctor Who, though he is not popular among modern viewers. The 1966 story, titled “The Celestial Toymaker” hints that he has faced the Doctor before in another adventure. The anniversary special is all set to offer a fresh take on one of the most complex villains of the series.

Beep the Meep

Beep the Meep

Beep the Meep is another dangerous villain in the Doctor Who series whom we encounter in the trailer. Though he comes across as cute and innocent because of his appearance, he is an evil intergalactic conqueror.

Beep the Meep takes advantage of his appearance to let his enemies underestimate him and put themselves at ease. This is the first time the conqueror is appearing onscreen. He first appeared in the comics in the story “Doctor Who and the Star Beast” and was quick to become a fan favorite.

The trailer also features a short glimpse of Beep the Meep’s spaceship, so we can look forward to seeing some exciting stuff featuring him in the 60th anniversary special.

Wrath Warrior

The third villain that the trailer gives us a glimpse of is a Wrath Warrior. Wrath Warriors are quite similar to the modern Doctor Who villains known as the Judoon, who are an intergalactic police force.

Wrath Warriors also first appeared in the story “Doctor Who and the Star Beast”, where they were seen chasing Beep the Meep. By introducing these villains from the tie-ins in the Doctor Who 60th anniversary special, Davies is making an effort to honor the show’s legacy.

The Wrath Warriors are an intergalactic species, genetically engineered by the Star Council, designed to serve as warriors in the war against the Meeps. However, they later take up a more positive role as the police.

It is possible that the Wrath Warriors play a similar role in the series, where they are introduced as villains but later become allies after the Doctor finds out the truth about Beep the Meep.
