Ghost of Tsushima is the gift that keeps on giving. Not only did Sucker Punch deliver a fantastic story and a visually stunning game, but they also followed it up with a completely free multiplayer mode. Now, the studio has plans for the first major story expansion to the game, titled Iki Island, which brings a new land to explore, and a new enemy to take down.
The hype and anticipation for Iki Island is incredible and made even more impressive by the fact that it is an expansion, not a standalone game. It just goes to show how much people loved the 2020 PlayStation exclusive. The newest trailer answers some questions fans had when the expansion was first announced but has also led to new mysteries regarding the story.
The trailer begins by setting up the core narrative of the Iki Island expansion and why the player is there at all. The island has been taken over by another tribe of Mongols, this time led by a woman known as The Eagle, a shaman named Ankhsar Khatun.
The trailer shows Jin traveling to the island by boat, only for a storm to strand him there, leading him to have a face-to-face encounter with The Eagle and what she’s capable of doing.
The second half of the trailer is focused on showing players what awaits them on Iki island.
New environments to explore were shown; there were hints of some story quests, such as the scene with the fireworks and the return of some old characters. We even got a glimpse of some of the new armor players will be able to acquire on Iki, something we assume has been drawn from the Japanese island’s culture.
A new description for the Ghost of Tsushima expansion states that Iki stands in “stark contrast” to Tsushima. It is a land of raiders, bandits, and criminals, a place still scarred from the battles of the past. Samurai have also been missing from the island for a while, which has forced the people of the island to become more self-reliant in an untamed and ferocious manner.
Sucker Punch has stated that players can expect the same kind of experience from the Iki Island expansion as they enjoyed with the original Ghost of Tsushima. It will be focused on action and exploration, adding new legends, locations, techniques, and quests. But the studio has said that the Iki Island expansion is thematically unique. It has been described as a “story of healing,” addressing wounds from the past. Keep your tissues close.
The Iki Island expansion is set to launch on August 20th. It will also be part of the Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, which can be purchased as a PS4 upgrade for $19.99 or a full PS5 release for $69.99.
