Big things are in store for the Final Fantasy 14 players. A new update has been announced that allows players to connect with each other, regardless of their data centers. This will make playing the game with your friends much easier and more fun.
Towards the end of the Final Fantasy 14 announcement showcase, Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda made an appearance to show the Final Fantasy 14 PS5 version, but also ‘accidentally’ revealed that patch 5.5 will release on April 13th, 2021. Quite an entertaining faux slip-up, with Game Director Naoki Yoshida and Translation Director Michael Christopher Koji Fox also playing along by acting disappointed in the CEO’s sudden reveal.
The little routine didn’t go beyond revealing the release date, as we don’t really know what patch 5.5 is going to bring to the table. What we do know is that it is the final post-launch patch for the Shadowbringers expansion which will connect the narrative to the next expansion, Endwalker. FF14 post expansion updates have followed a fairly well-known template so far, adding a few hours of story quests, a new dungeon, new raid and some side activities as well.
Game Director Naoki Yoshida also said that the team is working on a system which will allow players to visit friends who are operating on different data centers. This means you can play with your friends, regardless of whether you’re on the same server or even the same region. This is a big deal since previously you couldn’t play with your friends if they were functioning on servers or regions different from yours.
Yoshida did state that the new system will come with certain restrictions to keep the servers balanced. He also stated that players would be required to log out before switching, a major difference from the World Travel system which allows you to remain in the game while jumping between servers.
There’s even more exciting news for Final Fantasy 14 players with the new expansion Endwalker, releasing soon.
