Jerry Seinfield shares a new update about his upcoming movie about the invention of pop-tarts. The film, titled Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story, is a fictionalized, humorous retelling of the invention of pop-tarts scheduled to premiere on Netflix. No release date has been announced yet.
The film is inspired by Seinfield’s legendary bit about pop-tarts which became popular through his stand-ups. Pop-tarts were first introduced in the market in 1964 and it remained an iconic snack, loved by everyone irrespective of age.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Seinfield shares a recent update regarding the progress of his film. The comedian hints at the potential release date of the film and confirms that he is already in the post-production process.
Seinfield also gives the audience an idea of what to expect from Unfrosted. Check out his entire comment below –
“Netflix is watching it today for the first time after I just finished editing and then we’ll see where it’s at next week. It should be out early next year, I think.
“There is no story. But there are a couple of elements that are true that we use to begin the story, which is that Post came up with this idea and Kellogg’s heard about it and said, ‘We have to do the same thing.’ And then I kind of told the story as The Right Stuff with NASA versus the Soviet Union.”
Unfrosted will be set in 1963 Michigan and focus on the real-life rivalry between two cereal companies, Post and Kellogs. Netflix describes the film as a story of “ambition, betrayal, sugar and menacing milkmen.”
The film is Seinfield’s take on the race to change breakfast forever and will be a not-so-popular story of betrayal. The actual story behind the invention of pop-tarts is quite basic, as confirmed by Seinfield himself. However, the comedian wishes to incorporate some true-to-life elements into his retelling of the events.
Unfrosted consists of an ensemble cast including Hugh Grant, Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan, Melissa McCarthy, and James Marsden. Details about their roles have not yet been revealed, but every member of the cast is known for their comic timing. Seinfield will definitely be able to use their talents in suitable ways.
It is no doubt a big challenge to take up a mundane topic like the invention of pop-tarts and turn it into a full-length comedy movie. However, Seinfield seems pretty confident about the project.
According to Seinfield, he was able to take the pop-tart reference from his last Netflix comedy special and turn it into an entire feature film. Considering the unique subject, the treatment and Seinfield’s work in comedy, it seems like Unfrosted will be a unique and special film.
Hopefully, Netflix will announce an official release date for the project soon.
