The trailer for James Gray’s upcoming autobiographical drama, Armageddon Time is out now. The film is all set to release in theaters on October 28, 2022.
Armageddon Time is written, directed, and produced by James Gray. The film is an autobiographical, coming-of-age drama inspired by Gray’s own childhood in Queens, New York in the 1980s. The cast includes Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, Banks Repeta, Jaylin Webb, and Anthony Hopkins.
The film premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival on May 19. It was much acclaimed after its Cannes screening and continued to earn praises during recent screenings at the Telluride Film Festival as well.
The recently released trailer introduces Paul Graff (Banks Repeta), who forms an unlikely friendship with a fellow student (Jaylin Webb), who’s Black. This unusual friendship sparks complications in a radically shifting political era. Check out the trailer below.
The trailer also features Jeremy Strong and Anne Hathaway as Irving and Esther Graff, Paul’s parents. Anthony Hopkins plays a significant role as Paul’s grandfather, who urges him to fight against racism and asks him if “not doing anything” about racial discrimination is a “smart thing” to do.
The trailer also mentions significant political events, such as Ronald Reagan’s appointment as the President of the United States. It gives us a glimpse into Gray’s soul-searching, sensitive, politically conscious drama that deals with family issues, generational divide, and the various nuances of friendship.
Armageddon Time will most likely prove to be a reflective and politically aware drama. As is clear from the trailer, the film will throw light upon the various political ramifications of Reagan’s America. According to critics’ reviews, Armageddon Time is not subtle when it comes to delivering a message.
Off late, there’s been an increasing trend of filmmakers exploring their upbringing, cultural heritage, and family in their films. One such example is Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma, which won several Oscars. Kenneth Branagh also won an Academy Award for his film, Belfast.
Gray has been on an excellent run of late, so here’s hoping Armageddon Time lives up to its expectations and continues Gray’s trend of remarkable movies.
