Ahead of its release, a new trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water, features the cast along with director James Cameron, teasing a bigger and more ambitious sequel. Avatar: The Way of Water will release in theaters on December 16, 2022.
The Way of Water is set more than a decade after the events of the first film and takes place on the alien planet of Pandora. The film follows Jake and Neytiri dealing with a new threat while trying to protect and keep their family together.
The sequel is all set to explore various new, unknown regions of Pandora and introduce a plethora of new characters in the franchise. Just a week before the film’s theatrical release, a new trailer, which was released on the official Avatar YouTube channel, gives a glimpse into the massive scale of the film.
Check out the featurette trailer below –
The featurette focuses on the beautiful flora and fauna of Pandora and teases the stellar worldbuilding in the film. It also features James Cameron, along with the cast, promising their audience that the sequel will deliver and become a more high-staked adventure than the first film. It will also be an emotional rollercoaster for fans.
I think what people are in store for is Avatar but times 100. It takes it to a whole other place.
Kate Winslet
Cameron’s 2009 fantasy, Avatar, remains the highest-grossing film of all time even today. It managed to garner the praise of both critics and the audience alike, but there’s a fair chance that the sequel will surpass the original film.
The first film portrayed Jake as sort of a blank slate for the audience. He discovers the planet through his own eyes. The film focused more on its worldbuilding and introducing the viewers to the world and beauty of Pandora.
However, the sequel will most likely focus more on Jake as a character, the complexities in his relationship with Neytiri and how he has changed ever since he became a Na’vi.
From what we’ve seen in the trailers, Avatar: The Way of Water introduces a totally new clan called the Metkayina clan and focuses on an oceanic biome. Cameron is definitely expanding on the world of Pandora, while also using advanced 3D technology to depict underwater action.
The film was shot using advanced 3D cameras and underwater motion capture technology, which is all set to be revolutionary in terms of technological advancements in films. The first film was also considered a benchmark in terms of technological use in its time.
I’ve never seen anything like this in a movie.
Sigourney Weaver
While we have to wait for December 16 to arrive to see what the audience feels about the film, it seems to be a promising return to the fantasy world of Pandora. The sequel will also focus on character growth and the emotional aspect by focusing more on Jake and Neytiri’s family.
It might also focus on environmental themes as Cameron calls himself an environmental advocate. The first film focused on the environmental aspect as well, so the sequel could easily work with the same theme. Come December 16, we will all know!
